In a way, yeah. All of a sudden, at some arbitrary age, we say “here, you’re an adult now. Happy adulting!”
I do think we’ve lost something by not having some sort of a rite of passage. What that rite of passage should be, I have no idea, but I’d like to entertain that idea.
The older I get the less of an adult I want to be.
OP, are you considering paying taxes and such to be "privilege"? Why?
I would consider any adult "privilege" to be more in the way of having autonomy, which includes society taking you more seriously. This may be only theoretical if there are cultural things that may not allow that, but in theory, adults get to choose how to live their lives. And yes, it does happen automatically because no one has a choice about getting older; it happens no matter what you do. (So no, adulthood is not "earned." People are adults whether they act like it or not, whether they pass certain milestones or not, etc.)
Starting anything off with this absurdity negates all that follows as equally absurd.
You don't earn your rights, they are a condition of existence. Until you understand that, you understand nothing on this topic.
