Subsistence farming is a life of poverty, but it's better than the nation starving to death.
Subsistence farming IS "the nation starving to death". It's not productive enough to feed everyone. Wayyyyyyyy too many people nowadays to feed.

I agree that mechanized megafarming will end, for the reasons you mention and others.
But that doesn't mean a return to traditional subsistence farming.
Small farms will still exist, but their old-fashioned natural products will be high-end and expensive. And I'm pretty sure we'll see more hydroponics, both industrial scale and individual scale.

I don't know that there is anything that will keep his supporters from voting for him. It appears that they are happy to swallow his lies, especially the ones that he cares about them. Of course, giving them bailouts probably helps too.
It's not how "liberals" feel about it that's the issue. It's how the FARMERS feel about it - and how they feel about TRUMP. So far, they are still hanging with him, but if the trade war doesn't end soon - and it's looking like it probably won't - those farmers will probably not be so loyal to Trump anymore. His policies are destroying their livelihood.
