London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced a crackdown on knives Sunday in response to the rising levels of violence in London, which recently surpassed New York City's homicide rate for the first time. "No excuses: there is never a reason to carry a knife," Khan tweeted. "Anyone who does will be caught, and they will feel the full force of the law."

There have been more than 50 homicides in London so far in 2018, and much of the violence is tied to gangs. Guns are strictly regulated in the United Kingdom and the rising homicide rate in London is directly attributable to a rise in knife-related crimes, with stabbings claiming at least 31 lives to date in 2018. By contrast, New York — which has a population roughly the same size as London — has seen a steady decline in violent crime.

No, this isn't a story from the Onion. It's just the weird, nutty reality the left wants us to live in.

Ban steak.

You'll drop your homicide rate in half.

Someone in the comments mentioned that London also has three times the reported rapes as New York City. Disturbing if true. They may want to think about banning rape as well.

This is a story from early last year. The phenomenon did not last. Last year, London ended up with 132 homicides. NYC ended up with 289.

I just see the irony in the words -- SHARPER knife control. Their knives are just too dull across the pond.

Here are some updated stats to July of this year:

As this issue continues to come up on social media, here are the updated figures at the halfway point in 2019. So far, in 2019 through 2 June, London has had 75 murders through 8 July 2019. In 2019 through 30 June, New York City has reported 135 murders.
So no, there are STILL not more murders in London than in NYC.

My understanding is any knife over 3 inches is already banned "without good reason" as is any knife with locking blade. e.g. leatherman would be banned.
