Temporarily, yes. Long term, no. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet, and it will only get worse if allowed to continue unchecked.

So far, about 30% more is being paid to farmers than is being taken in by tariffs. Effectively, American businesses are paying more taxes (tariffs) that are being passed on to the consumer and farmers are being put on welfare that is being paid by me and you. Companies, consumers and farmers all loose.

Then Trump needs to stick to his guns and raise those tariffs, not wait until December.

Probably due to cultural issues such as LGBT issues and religion. Most farmers and rural Americans are very conservative when it comes to social values. If we could get religion out of politics, the political makeup of our society would be very different.

The Chinese own America. all the big box stores are full of chinese product, half the stuff in Super markets come from Chins, most of your electronics come from China. and you want to slap tarrifs on all their exports? only a dummy like trump could think that course of action would work. How would i fix your percieved problem? id leave well enough alone.

Its not really Liberal logic, it may seem so here on City-Data, but there are liberal Democrats like Chuck Schumer who are supporting the President on China. And the Democrats used to be the party that would try to protect American workers.

The real problem is the Establishment that dominates BOTH parties, even our left wing party. These are people who want open borders, who care only about their stock and mutual and fund portfolios, and who care less about the long term damage to the American economy. Just as long as they are doing good, who cares about the country as a whole?

I’m a protectionism skeptic, but for now I am in a wait-and-see mode. I’m pessimistic that China will change much, but I’m not against trying. It’ll take a pretty bold stroke and a bit of pain to make anything happen, if it’ll happen at all.
