Companies, consumers and farmers all loose.
But, next year the farmers will plant a different crop with more domestic demand....I keep half-joking about putting beef cows in all those soybean fields! I love steak and it's too dang expensive, and it appears that soybeans are a great protein and fat source for beef cows.
Then, the tariffs will encourage/make it viable for a company to make a competing product domestically that couldn't before the tariffs. Some US worker now has a job making that widget and the domestic company and the worker will both be paying taxes, and overall we can stop the perpetual unwinding of our country. The economic pain is in the short term, while the transition happens and we break our addiction to China's junk.

Your complaining about billions now but I don't recall any posts from you complaining about the massive trade deficits with China and the huge losses since 2014 and earlier.

US trade deficits with China since 2014

2014 -345 billion
2015 -367 billion
2016 -347 billion
2017 -375 billion
2018 -420 billion
2019 -167 billion

US trade deficits with China (historic)
1985 -6 billion
1990 -10 billion
1995 -34 billion
2000 -84 billion
2005 -202 billion
2010 -273 billion
2015 -367 billion

Do you see the trend? You may not like Trump but he was the only one who has confronted this issue. And btw, you can add up all the trade deficits and money being lost to China for decades and then only come back and complain about billions this year?

In all fairness, it is costing China billions too. For us, Trump gave us this self inflicted wound, and probably slowed down our good economy unnecessarily. Time will tell.

China should be sent back to 1988 when it was a complete ****hole with a lower GDP than India... and a lower GDP per capita than most African nations.

What Bush 41, Clinton, and Bush 43 did with China was treason to the united states.

They pretend to be innocent.... but they knew what they were doing.

the stock market does not matter... unless China enters the modern world of trade... America will face massive damage in the long run.

The goal right now would be **** with China as much as possible... and encourage companies to leave for Vietnam, Indonesia, India, or even with luck back to America.

Blocking US exports... copying US products&shipping them world-wide... manipulating currency... and stealing technology... America would never let a country get away with this much abuse... yet Obama did absolutely nothing, and our prior idiot presidents created this situation.

China is a cancer to the entire world, and should be cured, or sent back to 1988.

Democrats should put Trump hatred aside... and for once be patriots, and support America. China's human rights do not exist.

If there ever was a war that was justified, and worth it for nation building... it would have been china. The Neo-Cons entered other countries that did far less.

Yeah, Free Trade policies have been a disaster for the U.S. Note that these were solidly Republican policies at the time that NAFTA was signed, and Billary betrayed Americans by signing this Republican law.

Both parties are complicit here.

But electing an orange idiot man-child is no way to fix this. Stupid is not a path to success... unless success is defined by inheriting hundreds of millions of dollars.

I don't quite understand how success at inheriting money is supposed to translate into leadership ability.

Bush Sr. drafted NAFTA, Billary signed it. Trump is the first president with the gumption to step up and do something about it. We've lost way too much money, tax revenue, and jobs to unfair trade policy. I would support any Democrat that would step up and continue to level the playing field on trade. This is what MAGA is about to me...not democrat or republican, but America proud, back to manufacturing jobs making quality goods.

You know what's gonna cost us countless trillions more over the coming years? Providing a military deterrent/counterbalance to a rapidly militarizing China whose military technology is rapidly catching up to ours thanks to our previous policy of basically handing that technology over to them or doing nothing while they steal it. So cry me a river because we have a President who is finally at least trying to put an end to the technology hand-off and hold China to account for its unrepentant intellectual property theft.

"America proud"

"back to manufacturing jobs making quality goods"

??

How does any of what is going on now lead to that?

Automation is how we compete in manufacturing and finding competent Americans to operate, monitor, and troubleshoot automated equipment can be a challenge.

Several years ago, Siemens was interviewing people in the Charlotte area in anticipation of opening an hydraulic pump manufacturing plant. Read where they interviewed over 3,000 people and could not come up with 300 competent ones, ones who could use computers to operate the equipment.

Plenty said they were willing to learn. The deal was, the company was not interesting in running a training program, they wanted to hire trained people.

You seem to be completely clueless as to what is going on in China.
