For example, shows about police or detectives always have a character who is spending his weekends trying to solve a murder mystery or track down a wanted terrorist. In the real world the FBI employee clocks out at 5 p.m. Monday-Friday and probably spends the time between 9-5 surfing Youtube.

This seems more like an Entertainment post than P&OC, but whatever. I want to see good TV and movies. A movie about a slack off working 9-5 while a murderer gets away probably isn't going to be good. Nevermind that I doubt many police and FBI agents work a cushy 9 to 5 while they are actively investigating a crime

I look forward to Mexican movie stars willing to work for 1/10th of the American, Hollywood movie star salaries. Let us wait and see how the self righteous, American, Hollywood stars feel when they are affected by cheap labor in their profession.

Most government employees put in a hard 40 hours of work. Per year.

Tirelessly redistributing the hard earned stolen wealth of others.

A realistic portrayal of a politician might not sell well and defeats the purpose of escapism!

Hah! That reminds me of a joke:

Q: How many people work in your agency?
A: Oh....about half of them.

There are exception, some hard workers in the public sector.

But yes, most have little motivation to work hard.
