The British government has been mocked and criticized for putting advertisements meant to discourage knife crime on boxes of takeout fried chicken, according to multiple reports.
The United Kingdom’s Home Office tweeted Wednesday: “We are rolling out our #KnifeFree chicken boxes in over 210 chicken shops in England and Wales, including Morley’s, Dixy Chicken and Chicken Cottage. They use real life stories to show people how they can go #KnifeFree.”
Although to be fair to new PM Boris Johnson he has started recruiting 20,000 extra police, has announced 10,000 extra prison places and is increasing stop and search powers, so he already has done a lot in a very short period of time, and it should be noted that London was a lot less violent when Boris was in charge as Mayor when compared to Labour's Sadiq Khan.
I sort of get the idea. But in country where guns are hard to get hold of, people have went to knives. Banning knives lot harder. Just ask any warden of any prison out there to show you his collection of confiscated shivs. People are very creative in making stabby-stabby implements out of even plastic wrap. Usually for one time use. So making a knife out of whatever handy metal is out there or just sharpening a screwdriver, not rocket science. Doesnt have to be hardened or tempered for one time use.
I don't like to eat with my hands, so I DO use a knife and fork to eat foods like fried chicken, ribs and other items people consider "finger foods". A sharp knife.
We had a thread on this several months ago. I posted that if something has to be printed on these boxes, why not print an uplifting, inspirational message such as the message against knives? I stand by that. You're getting the word out at virtually zero cost.
The Brits have been way ahead of us for years in knife control. It's time we did some catching up. It's not often noted that we have developed a dangerous and potentially deadly knife culture in this country since around the 1980s and the advent of companies such as Spyderco knives.
