I remember all us kids growing up in the South having to sit in the front so every Sunday we could get told we were going to burn in Hell. No matter what the pastor talked about somehow he worked it in to his sermon that we were going to Hell.

The Bible is more accurate than many history books.

You had a good pastor, those that do not accept Jesus are going to hell.

I went to Catholic school in the 60s and of course we had prayer. I think some of my classmates were praying to get through the day without Sister Rosella taking a ruler to their behinds.

That wasn't just southern. I grew up in New Jersey, and they wanted to make sure we too knew we were going to burn in hell. Jesus was always watching and was gonna get you if you did something wrong. He was eight feet tall in a stained glass window and glaring down at you, unsmiling. If you didn't beg for forgiveness for your sin, you might die and go to HELL!!!

But that was the Reformed Church of America. In school we didn't have prayer, and I am 61.

Interestingly, I've found that some people (mainly 20- and 30-somethings, it seems) refuse to believe that such as school prayer ever happened outside of a religious school. It seems to be something that today's youngsters have trouble wrapping their minds around (which puzzles me, too).

Any of you 50-somethings (or older) ever have prayer in public school? I can't be the Lone Ranger here.
Yes, and bible readings.

And, no, I don't think they should bring it back.

God might have something to say about that.

We're all so sure we have it right. God is a lot bigger than the little personal box we try to put Him in.

Yep. Real chandelier shakers. My dad insisted we go to church until we were thirteen, then we were old enough to choose for ourselves. None of us went back.

Wow, what an atomic pile you just unloaded there. Apparently someone forgot the teaching to Love your Neighbor, and the parable about the Samaritan.

Nothing in there about democrats or republicans, though.
