People don't elect the President, STATES DO. The people in each state vote, and then Electors are appointed by the state, and counted. Do you not know this? We are not a Democracy, we are a Constitutional Representative Republic and a collection of STATES. The less populace STATES wanted to make sure they wouldn't get steam rolled by the MOB.
We are a representative democracy, specifically a republic, which is one such form of democracy.
Cons frequently confuse direct democracy with the broader definition.

You see under a democratic vote the people are held responsible for their actions
If you allow a minority to rollover a majority the majority of people can say hey I didn't vote for that guy I have plausible deniability and thus are not responsible
