Time and again Republicans like to say JFK would be a Republican today. It's simply not true. Here is a well known JFK quote:

“If by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people-their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties-someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal", then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal.”

What Republican would say that?

Any Democrat who said this today would be politely requested to leave the platform.

JFK was a member of the NRA, he lowered taxes, he appointed anti-abortion Supreme Court Justice Byron White, he grew the military, he was extremely anti-socialism, he was a straight white Christian male. Not a chance in hell he would be a Democrat today.

Imagine a Democrat today being an NRA member? Almost comical to think about.

I think he would be a Democrat. Guns weren't a problem like they are today. And women's rights hadn't evolved yet. He would have changed with the times, looked ahead, and would be a moderate Democrat. Most Democrats are moderate. We are not far left crazies any mor than Republicans are far right crazies.

Plenty of Democrats have been members of the NRA before the NRA lost any sense of objectivity and moderation. Lowering taxes during a strong economic cycle will likely be regarded as a big mistake in retrospect. Abortion was not legal in JFK's time so that makes no sense. And implying that every Democrat is gay and ever Republican is straight is downright silly.

Also, this "anti-socialism" rhetoric is becoming laughable. There are so many socialistic programs - including public schools - among dozens of other examples. His quote addresses health care, housing, schools, civil rights and civil liberties, it ends with JFK saying he is proud to be a liberal.

He'd be no different than his brother Teddy who was a liberal lion in the Senate until the very end.

I think he would.

But, I have to wonder if Reagan would even recognize his party these days.
