Really? I didnt read one response that gave me the idea anyone was threatened. Most supported the idea or poked fun.
Why in the world would anyone be threatened by a doll.

If I am going to shell out money for a robot, I want a robot that will clean my house, cook, mow the lawn, clean up the dog poop, do laundry, etc. Not a one trick wonder that just lies in bed and probably has no imagination. A cleaning robot doesn't need much AI and doesn't even have to look lifelike, so save the money on design there. I want a super Rumba with enough AI to know the bathroom is messy and it should go clean it without me telling it to. Plus, since most people are paired off and most men don't have issues with women, I would think demand for robotic maids would have a higher demand (appeal to those in relationships and those not). Plus businesses would want them too (imagine how much hotels could save having robotic maid service or office building or gyms).

I would say I wonder why the Chinese are spending so much of their time with such a niche product* (a robot that does one thing only and only appeals to a fraction of half the population. Probably less than the number of people willing to shell out money for a sex doll). But I suspect their one child combined with favoring male babies has a lot to do with it. Usually when countries have a surplus of males, they go to war. This is a nicer alternative.

* Edited to say, maybe it's not that so much time is spent on these kinds of robots, but that they make for more sensational stories and click rates so we hear about them more often than something more dull (but more useful to mankind).

If they make THAT, I'll buy her.

Whitney Cummings bought a AI sex doll of herself, she had it on her show.

This isn't always an issue of a shy socially inept men, 35 years of China one child policy made 30 million more men then women in China due to families preface for boys over girls. Some Chinese families resort to "buying" brides from Cambodia, North Korea, and Vietnam to marry there sons, sometimes thru human trafficking. A similar situation is in India, many families used sex-selective abortion to choose boys with the help of ultrasound to identify the sex of a child before birth. The gender gap has been estimated to be over 40 million in India.

Having so many single, men, frustrated by not having a partner or any hope of finding one could cause social instability. Just look at the ISIS, the promise to young Arab men across the middle east of virgins brought almost hundred thousand foreign volunteers to increase there ISIS ranks, creating a more dangerous organization to had to be dealt with. Just imagine another terrorist organization in China or India with millions of potential recruits.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the Chinese government had a hand in funding the development of these robots, anything to give unmarried men a release to neutralize them as a future threat.
