What this means many good officers will be leaving the force. And Eventually California will become again the wild Wild West.

CA cops aren't exactly known for being civil. I think it's a good idea.

This just means cops will avoid calls to bad areas. I don't blame them either.

This is feeding meat to the lions. The fringe left is having a rippling effect on lowering the quality of life everywhere. The idea of changing the law from "reasonable" to "necessary" puts the onus on the cop in split second decisions to be right every single time.

If Were a cop I'd use it to my advantage: "officer why didn't you shoot the bank robber?" Officer's answer: "I didn't think it was necessary. I tried to deescalate the situation."

It'll be interesting to see if cops use the "I didn't think it was necessary" excuse every time someone's life is endanger should they decide not to use lethal force.

What could possibly happen with this feel good pat on the back nonsense?

If the cops are not allowed to protect themselves what makes anyone think that they will make much of an effort to protect the average citizen?

I can see it now, there will be a mass shooting and the cops will wait outside until the shooting stops, not out of fear for their lives but out of fear that if they shoot the shooter that they will have to justify their actions and possibly lose their careers.

I wonder how many young people will be heading into law enforcement in the near future when the criminals have more Rights than they do and now this that they cannot defend themselves.

i think most of you are reading to much into this, but we shall see. right now cops are all to ready to use their firearms when they are not necessary. cops are also far to ready to violate the rights of the people on a whim, and make things up as they go along.

Sounds like a lot of “small government” conservatives on here defending excessive use of force by police.

MAGAs sure do like bootlicking unionized government employees in blue costumes.

Here's a better solution--abolish all government cops and let security be handled by the free market:
