Trump is totally going off the rails. He now says he will force companies to leave China:

Quote:
As he arrived in France for the annual meeting of the Group of 7 powers, Mr. Trump posted a message on Twitter citing the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 — a law meant to enable a president to isolate criminal regimes but not intended to be used to cut off economic ties with a major trading partner because of a disagreement over tariffs.

“For all of the Fake News Reporters that don’t have a clue as to what the law is relative to Presidential powers, China, etc., try looking at the Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977,” Mr. Trump wrote. “Case closed!”

It won’t matter. American companies have “sister” companies in China that are owned 51% by the Chinese government, so technically not a US company.

Tyranny anyone? If there was any doubt that Trump has a clue as to what he is doing, this latest policy-by-meltdown should wipe out all such doubt.

Trump is now in the process of destroying jobs, companies, the economy. Good job! Someone really should call this bozo's bluff in public--the G-7 is a perfect backdrop.

"....Trump does not have the authority to “duly order” companies to leave China, according to Jennifer Hillman, a Georgetown University law professor and trade expert at the Council on Foreign Relations.... Trump can prevent future transfers of funds to China, she said. First, he would have to make "a lawful declaration that a national emergency exists,” she said. Congress could terminate the declaration if it wishes, she said.

...“Moreover, even if all this happened, it would not provide authority over all of the U.S. investments that have already been made in China...

....apparel and electronics makers have been moving out of China...But few of these companies have been moving jobs back to the United States. Instead, they’ve been shifting to other low-cost countries such as Vietnam or Bangladesh....company president, said he has tried to move production to other countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam, but that factories in those countries are already saturated with orders....majority continue to come from China...Trump tariffs have caused import duties to rise to 42.6 percent on many of her items, up from 17.6 percent ....had to lay off her staff of six, and now relies on hourly contractors to help with accounting, shipping and graphic design..."

"...tried to find ways to manufacture mattresses in the United States, but would need about $1 million worth of machinery from China, which is now subject to the Trump administration’s recent 25 tariffs on imports....I’m trying my best, and now you want to tax me on the machinery I need to manufacture in the United States? That’s real smart,” he said. “This has been a disaster.”

"...in the back of Trump’s D.C. hotel, golf caps and travel coffee mugs emblazoned with the Trump name and made in China are still offered for sale, alongside other products produced in Indonesia, Vietnam and other countries.

Trump is writing his own epitaph here. Back in the campaign I pointed to Evan Mecham, an Arizona governor accused of bigotry and divisiveness like Trump. He was fine until he switched from race-baiting to hurting the bottom line of AZ businesses. He got impeached and tossed out in disgrace in short order. There is a line you don't cross in this country and Trump is about to step over it.

Someone tell Trump and the GOP that it is not 1950s America anymore. We haven't been in a manufacturing golden age since then. Our economy has evolved. Stop trying to bring us back 50-60 years.

TBH, the brilliance of the Chinese is astounding. They knew they could get under Trump's him skin with the $75 bn in tariffs and Trump would have a meltdown. The time for their retaliation was perfect right after Trump is send all sorts of signals that the economy is about to go into a recession. Now that he has gotten a challenge to his machoism, the Chinese calculated that he'd probably try to show them who's boss. Which is exactly what he's trying to do now with 30% tariffs and his insane Twitter posts. In the end the average American will be harmed the most, we will have to pay much more, and the economy will go into a recession. Perfect timing by the Chinese for throwing darts, because Trump is going off the rails right before elections and will start a recession that will doom the GOP before they begin.

Trump isn't going to force companies to do anything. He is making these statements to scare China. Plus he only said he would order companies to LOOK FOR alternative places to do business, not "make them move". Get a grip Libs.

The NYT is an irresponsible Trump hating propaganda machine.
