So, let's take our own poll on this question. Has "political correctness" gone too far and does it exceed common sense?
Quote:
Political correctness has gone too far and 'exceeds common sense', three quarters of Britons say

Political correctness has gone too far and “exceeds common sense”, three quarters of Britons have said in a wide ranging study. More than half of people also said political correctness is “eroding the expression of Britain’s values and traditions” in a report by the LSE using findings from Opinium.

In the report due to be published next week, 76 per cent of people agreed political correctness “sometimes goes too far and exceeds common sense”. Only 17 per cent of people surveyed said they want to see politicians determining what is or isn’t politically correct.
This is from a British source. They are on the average somewhat to the left of us here in the US. Also, it seems to me that this is more of a problem here than it is there. So, what do you think?

P.C. has become a really big problem. I can understand some points of P.C. that might be tolerable and perhaps even necessary. For example, rather than call someone "retarded", you could say "dumb" or "mentally challenged". However, when you do historical revisions or change the established race, ethnicity, religion, orientation, gender, etc. of an established fictional character, you have gone too far.

Referring to the decades of white-washing of characters, practice that continues today?

I listen to British radio programs on Alexa--a good one is LBC United Kingdom--and the people calling in do complain about PC. But I think PC is more of a problem here than it is there. We have gone fanatical with tearing down statues, changing the names of sports teams, banning state flags. I can see that with some things we need to be considerate of people's feelings and not ridicule them, but lately it seems like people are just looking for something to be offended about. Toughen up and learn to take it because we can't change our entire language and culture. We can and should change some things. It's a matter of knowing when to draw the line.

I think when my thoughts were being used to compose that post, it was more about Blackwashing but it also Whitewashing and other race-bends. For example, in a comic book a character that was established as being White in all adaptations is now Japanese in some big-budget summer movie version.

But you do understand which is actually far more prominent?

To get upset at a few that have been made non-white while ignoring the many that were made white says a lot.

PC-ness probably can't maintain its momentum without finding new political behavior to "correct", so it seems inevitable it would head toward a ludicrous extreme. Support will start to wither at that point, and we'll return to some form of equilibrium.

PC-osity was just a temporary headfake in order to ship in beaucoup immigrants.

The real civil war, cold or otherwise, will be fought between traditional Englishmen and the new immigrants. The elite will follow the money (as always). News at eleven.
