Funny, all the budget conscious conservatives watch as deficits balloon under Trump - and then on top of that want to go on a massive taxpayer boondoggle to buy a frozen, desolate arctic land mass.

But for God's sake, whatever we do, let's not pay for half-decent healthcare!

Funny, isn't it? The world's supposed beacon of freedom discussing how once again they are going to claim ownership of a new group of people, who are already owned by another country.

The folks living in Greenland apparently get no say about a) being owned and b) who is the owner.

Oh what the hell, it's a 3rd world island covered in ice. Of course we can just claim it and act like the people there are sufficiently non-human enough that we can simply declare them pets.

It's not unlike the nationalistic notion that one must build things oneself ... for whatever reason.

Under nationalistic thinking, buying minerals from some other nation is to be avoided as much as is buying cellphones or children's toys from some other nation.

Why?

You would think that post-WWII Germany and Japan have taught everyone that you do not need to physically control natural resources in order to become prosperous. In fact, there is even an economic term called "Dutch Disease" whereby nations that do have control of natural resources begin struggling because they begin to rely too much on that natural resource.

If taking over Greenland is a good idea, why stop there? Why not invade Canada, Mexico and basically the rest of the world, and get it over with?
We did invade Canada in 1814. They kicked us out.

Even Kim Kielson, the PM of Greenland and leader of a pro-independence party, is against such an idea:

"Greenland is not for sale and cannot be sold, but Greenland is open for trade and cooperation with other countries — including the United States,” Kim Kielsen, Greenland’s premier, said in a statement, according to the Ritzau news agency."

Greenland is actually doing fine as part of Denmark, they get a huge check from Denmark every year, and they enjoy a whole lot of autonomy, something Catalunha can only dream about. Denmark allows Greenlanders to decide for themselves whether or not they want to become fully independent. In Spain they would send in the army.

One rare issue between Greenland and Denmark is the latter's blocking of Chinese investment in Greenland, which Greenlanders want, though. This whole discussion might even prompt Denmark to allow Chinese investment so that Greenlanders are more content.

Gosh, I can't understand why so many Dems have joined #WalkAway if the Dem party has such charming, inclusive people ^^^.

Someone with family members on Greenland said there are rumblings regarding a referendum to join the US. From what I've read about Greenlanders, however, they are considered a pain in the arse by many Danes because they make all sorts of demands. If they turn into another Puerto Rico, forget it!

Ignorance isn't a viewpoint that deserves inclusion.

Whoah! Someone references someone else who've heard "rumblings". That certainly is well-cited.

They're costly. We deal, because we owe them - Danes were colonialist with all that entails for centuries.

No one who reads newspapers would want to give up even semi-autonomy for the chance of being treated like Puerto Rico.

I think this is kind of the point. Alot of people won't discuss the factor of the Greenlandic people having a say. Said persons adovcating for getting Greenland don't care. I also think some persons view this as "they're Inuits, brown people, therefore, they are inferior and must be ruled by us". Some people really do view others as "non-human".

You probably would have said the same thing for the original 13 colonies. Besides, you're also probably the type who say we could use every immigrant we can find. Don't you want land to put them on?

Knowing that it isn't for sale and wishing it wouldn't be for sale, because Trump wants it, are two different things.
