A decision by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with a federal judge, who had ruled last year that denying the surgery for inmate Adree Edmo violated the constitution because it amounted to cruel and unusual punishment.

It will go to the Supreme Court, along with the rulings from the 5th and 1st Circuits that ruled the opposite way on similar cases. Should be interesting.

The truly amazing thing in this case is that both the treating physicians and various mental health professionals involved in the case are NOT agreeing that the surgery is necessary, unlike other cases that have resulted in rulings against the inmate. Oh wait, surprise, surprise, this came out of the 9th.

Not always. Many don't have a function in our society. They have learned that if they kick, scream and shout that they are being oppressed, they can get whatever they want. Or at least, more than they would have otherwise gotten on their own.

Cannot be sure, but think this happened before in California. State responded by simply paroling inmate in question, thus reliving them of any further obligations to provide medical care.

Thing is even if released Idaho might still be on the hook regardless. They did join Medicaid expansion created under Obamacare, and that scheme now pays for gender reassignment proceedures/treatments if deemed medically necessary. If this person qualifies for Medicaid in Idaho they could travel to another state and have the procedure done their on Medicaid dime. Here in New York they are coming from all over the country.

When it comes to government paid for healthcare they should be limited to necessities, not electives. This should count as an elective as his life isn’t in danger if he doesn’t have this surgery. Not only would he need surgery, he will also need a lifetime of medication to maintain the facade of being a woman. Also don’t agree with purely cosmetic procedures (like breast implants for example) except in cases of mastectomy, physical damage to body, and removing tattoos with links to criminal activity.

Narrative since Obama administration, and on many state/local government levels (such as New York), is that transgender is a disease, and as with any other when a physician deems certain treatments/proceedures medically necessary, insurance, Medicaid, etc... must pony up payment/provide service.

No different really than other things federal/local governments are forcing insurers/medical providers to cover and or provide service. Fertility treatments, various health screenings (including now in NYS early breast cancer), and so forth.

If you believe in universal or whatever healthcare, this is part and parcel of such schemes. Many European and Latin American countries with national health plans long have paid for transgender procedures/treatments. IIRC Cuba and some other places you wouldn't think are on that list.

I don't know anyone who doesn't think this is insane. This kind of thing isn't a one off...it's often the first step to a lifetime of medical care that wouldn't otherwise be necessary. There is zero sense to it.

Lol, check out the transgender and hospital thread. There’s some people that think all of this is fine and dandy. And that this is completely normal.
