There seems to be a concerted effort afoot to get pharmaceutical opiates banned in America.

It started with the Leslie Stahl report on opiate mills in Florida in 2009, graduated to the CDC guidelines in 2017 which put the fear of God into physicians prescribing painkillers for their legitimate patients, then to the DEA busting doctor after doctor and throwing quite a few into the slammer--which only deepened physicians' fear, even to the point of refusing to prescribe them even for terminal cancer patients.

Now with Johnson & Johnson losing half a billion dollars in a Oklahoma lawsuit and all 49 states lining up to take their shot at pharmaceutical companies who manufacture opiates, the question has to be asked:

Why should pharmaceutical companies risk their shareholder monies over a product they can do without manufacturing?

Profits on opiates sales are plummeting due to physicians refusing to write scripts for them under any circumstances. Every time a elderly person commits suicide to escape intractable pain Medicare and Social Security save hundreds of thousands of dollars. This is a powerful incentive for the Feds to allow the suicides to continue.

$500,000,000 x's 50 states equals what? 2.5 TRILLION dollars paid out???? When the liabilities manufacturing all prescription painkillers get so powerful that pharmaceutical companies simply refuse to to make them anymore, what will the 50 million people in chronic pain and the tens of thousands more suffering terminal cancer going to do??????? I see an America very soon where the strongest painkiller an American can get is Tylenol. A half a bottle of booze along with a handful of acetaminophen to kill the pain should knock out a few hundred million livers. That's a lot of incentive.

Of course there is an effort to demonize and ban them altogether...the priority is on ensuring the US remains a profitable marketplace for the drug cartels (cannot achieve that with competition still being permitted to sell their drugs too).

This is basically about killing the competition, and using the US system of justice to do it.

Half a billion is chump-change to J & J. The original amount that was sought from them was 17 billion.

Waiting for lawsuits filed by families of those killed by fentanyl in street drugs that are used when prescription opiates are not available.

Plus, if trump manages to upset the Chinese president again, he could start allowing the Fentanyl shipments from China to resume!

It's one state and a smaller one. There is already lawsuits in other states and if there isn't there will be. This could result in bankruptcy for them.

When all 50 states sue them for half-a-billion each, it won't be chump change.

regardless of how an addiction got started
1) all foreign substances put in the human body have some degree of harm period (can you say NSAIDS)
2) regulated pain medication can usually be taken for quite a long time

3) the current "WAR ON DRUGS" drives the hysteria of fentanyl ODs as well as the distribution of fentanyl
4) no law or legislation has ever reduced demand and/or availability of opiates they have only increased the misery into an addicts life in an effort to reduce consumption a man-made "consequence"...such laws do NOT take into account the "mindset" of an addict
