There seems to be a concerted effort afoot to get pharmaceutical opiates banned in America.
It started with the Leslie Stahl report on opiate mills in Florida in 2009, graduated to the CDC guidelines in 2017 which put the fear of God into physicians prescribing painkillers for their legitimate patients, then to the DEA busting doctor after doctor and throwing quite a few into the slammer--which only deepened physicians' fear, even to the point of refusing to prescribe them even for terminal cancer patients.
Now with Johnson & Johnson losing half a billion dollars in a Oklahoma lawsuit and all 49 states lining up to take their shot at pharmaceutical companies who manufacture opiates, the question has to be asked:
Why should pharmaceutical companies risk their shareholder monies over a product they can do without manufacturing?
Profits on opiates sales are plummeting due to physicians refusing to write scripts for them under any circumstances. Every time a elderly person commits suicide to escape intractable pain Medicare and Social Security save hundreds of thousands of dollars. This is a powerful incentive for the Feds to allow the suicides to continue.
$500,000,000 x's 50 states equals what? 2.5 TRILLION dollars paid out???? When the liabilities manufacturing all prescription painkillers get so powerful that pharmaceutical companies simply refuse to to make them anymore, what will the 50 million people in chronic pain and the tens of thousands more suffering terminal cancer going to do??????? I see an America very soon where the strongest painkiller an American can get is Tylenol. A half a bottle of booze along with a handful of acetaminophen to kill the pain should knock out a few hundred million livers. That's a lot of incentive.
It is the modern day pirates of the high seas (the Trial Lawyer's Association) sticking up companies for their own profit.
This is why the US always has to scramble for vaccines, as the Trial Lawyers have effectively killed the manufacture of vaccines in the US.

I feel sorry for the folks who are going to experience pain, you know like those in car accidents and stuff.

It is going to be tough on people with chronic pain because the new guidelines say docs should not prescribe for more than 10 days without very good cause. Cancer patients get a pass and basically can get all they want. But if you break a leg, expect only 10 days worth of opioids.
Could we not just fly in large amounts of opium/heroin from Afghanistan on C-17 Globemasters, C-5 Galaxies And C-130 cargo planes then refine it to meet FDA standards in America decimalize it and have safe injection sites and cut out the middleman?
Half a billion is chump-change to J & J. The original amount that was sought from them was 17 billion.
Yes and J&J stock went up 2% after the verdict. My question is why they were the only manufacturer being sued. There is a also another lawsuit brought by the same attorney that sued the tobacco companies, he is suing the distributors and others.

I recently had pins put in my ankle and 2 toes amputated. I was given pain meds for 3 days. I was told this and had to sign paperwork that I was aware of this new rule.
Unbelievable. The judge’s decision must be overturned. A company makes a medicine that helps a countless number of cancer patients and people with other serious problems with pain. Druggies choose to abuse them. Druggies sue the company and win. America.
nobody has lost a dime, this will be appealed, it will take years, J&J will prevail. They never handed out a pill to anyone.
You don't know what they handed out. It was common knowledge decades ago that drug companies let truckloads of pills disappear.
Where do you think the full time supply of speed pills (truckers) or street (seconal, nebula, etc.) came from for decades? Yep...
It's as if you think LE never took any of that money or of those drugs. People are corruptible and can be bought for very low prices.
The companies have a responsibility to use basic controls (mapping, norms, etc.) too determine if vast numbers of pills are going to the wrong (unpopulated, etc.) places.
All of that said, the water is over the dam. The Pill dealers raised their prices (the invisible hand) and the Government cracked down on legal scripts, so the next phase is millions more people getting illegal stuff. This is not the fault of the trial lawyers. All they can do is establish responsibility.
I agree that the billions which will be given up by the likes of CVS, Walmart, JJ, etc. will likely do ZERO to fix things. You can't fix them...that way. Only by semi-legalizing light opiates could you even slightly help the situation.
Mark my words. But, again, that's not the fault of the lawsuits. Government simply could not allow the situation to continue - a situation, BTW, which was made worse by Drug Company lobbyists who wrote a bill which changed one single word...that allowed them to get away with it.

J&J has a net worth of 360 BILLION. This settlement, even if ever enforced, is a drop in the bucket to J&J.
