Yep. The European White Men spread it like a malignant cancer.

There is a long (3000 year) history of slavery that encompasses every one. Who is paying reparations for whom? I'd say the bill [from the 16th to the 19th century,] should be given to the African Lords for creating the slave trade market and only if one can prove that the Europeans knew at the time of the trading, that those people had been kidnapped, and were not apart of the traditional Institution of Slavery ... would then a case could be made.
I want my reparations from those evil Romans.

Never mind 1619, what about 43AD and I will never forgive that Caesar for the invasions of Britain in 54 BC and again in 55 BC.

What is it about a magazine issue, dedicated to examining the lasting legacy of slavery on the 400th anniversary of the first arrival of enslaved Africans in America, that has the right so bent out of shape? Race and history are not partisan agendas contrary to Newt Gingrich and other conservative writers and pundits who are attempting to delegitimize this well received and overwhelmingly positively reviewed series.

Illustrating slavery’s impact on nearly every aspect of the country and examining the history of our nation is a laudable endeavor. The backlash from some Republican senators and conservative writers and Fox and an especially aggrieved Newt is stunning, but at the same time I guess it is predictable, if not stupid and transparent.

The first documented arrival of Africans to the colony of Virginia was recorded by John Rolfe in 1619.

One must ask themselves, why do conservatives fear voices and historians who are presenting long acknowledged and documented information to the country as it confronts topics and issues on the anniversary of this type of slavery to this land of ours?

If you want to seek truth and not relish in conservative partisan propaganda by political hacks, such as this thread's OP article, read some history; and if you have an opportunity consider a visit to Historic Jamestowne and Jamestown Settlement. Or you could read and learn from the marvelous history presentation of the NYT 1619 Project before being poisoned by the conservatives who have melted down over it.

For some light winter reading you might want to consider the following books that are recommended to folks who have an interest in Colonial Williamsburg and Historic Jamestowne and historical slavery:

Billings, Warren M. Ed. The Old Dominion in the Seventeenth Century - A Documentary History of Virginia, 1606-1689. University of North Carolina Press, 1975

Breen, T.H., and Innes, S. "Myne Owne Ground" - Race and Freedom on Virginia's Eastern Shore, 1640-1676. New York: Oxford University Press: 1980

Craven, Wesley F. White, Red and Black: The Seventeenth Century Virginian, Charlottesville, 1961.

Hening, William W. Ed. The Statues at Large: Being a Collection of all Laws of Virginia, from the first session of the Legislature in the year 1619. 13 Volumes Richmond, New York and Philadelphia, 1809-1823.

Hughes, Sarah and Zeigler, J. Jamestown's Other People, Children's Program Teachers Manual, , Colonial National Historical Park, 1976.

McCartney, Martha W., A Study of the Africans and African Americans on Jamestown Island and at Green Spring, 1619-1803, National Park Service and Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Williamsburg, Virginia, 2003. (This study is available on-line using this link. Please note this is a PDF file and requires Adobe Reader to view this document. It is 4.5 MB in size and consist of 262 pages)

McLLwaine, H.R. Minutes of the Council and general Court of Colonial Virginia, 1622-1632, 1670-1676, with notes and excerpts from the original Council and General Court records, Now Lost. Richmond, vVirginia1924.

Vaughan, Alden T. "Blacks in Virginia: A Note on the First Decade" The William and Mary Quarterly, XXIX, July 1972.
I tell you what. It is a shame that on the very week fo the 400 year anniversary of the arrival of African slaves in Virginia. Those descendents are lining up in line for Popeyes chicken sandwiches, fighting and twerking at Popeyes jsut for a chicken sandwich. What a shame.

People are always trying to judge the past using present values.

Its like trying to judge the Wright brothers airplane and saying it was wrong because they didn't use a jet engine.

The ideas and and morality of today just do not fit into a 300 year old culture.

Nobody is saying to ignore, or erase history, good or bad. Why tear down Civil War statues? Who is doing that? The LEFT. Democrats who want to try to find things in which to be offended. Like a statue can hurt you. They are idiots.

However, why constantly DWELL on slavery? Why use it only to divide people? The entire discussion of the ridiculous concept of Reparations is to DIVIDE. That's all it is doing. Constantly talking about slavery is to DIVIDE people. It's working

So keep OBSESSING over something that ended 155 years ago. Yeah, that's healthy for a society.

Europeans first time in Africa: These people are ignorant and primitive savages; hedonistic, running around naked , multiple wives, tribal wars , idol worship, medicine men, living in grass huts, and sacrificing animals. But this slavery thing....hmm, I like that.

No, the people of that time, people like Roger Williams (a Baptist pastor), Thomas Paine (an atheist political philosopher) were already pointing out the Christian hypocrisy of slavery in the 1600s and 1700s. Thomas Jefferson, a slaveholder himself, even admitted it was a sin.

The fact that political battles were ongoing since slavery was first established to outlaw it proves that people of that day judged it as wrong.

You aren't addressing the very date you feel it ended. No one can claim that we had equal rights until at least the 1960's when the Civil Right and Voting Rights laws were passed...and, then too at least one or two generation to take even a partial hold.

So are you saying at some point in maybe 2005 we should have dropped the issue?

Would you support statues of Hitler and his top SS people throughout Germany?

Slavery wasn't that bad....let me guess ------ LOL -- never mind.

Seriously -- unless you have been a slave you don't get to say that.

Some also forget that European slaves also existed in the colonies as well before it was replaced by indentured servitude, than back to pure slavery up until 1865. Also Native Americans owned black slaves, and even European slaves too. We also must not forget that slavery is a class in the economic systems. Either way slavery is still a moral wrong, but slavery and its history in America is a very touchy and toxic subject to talk about. Its really a topic to avoid and stay away from unless one is emotional or feels oppressed.
Where does this strange notion come from that the left thinks Native Americans and blacks are without sin? Does anybody from the left ever speak for the left is this forum?
