Teaching has to be about the only profession where employees have the gall to demand raises despite showing terrible results for their efforts.
Granted, I understand that teachers are only one part of the puzzle here (you need parental involvement, student effort, etc.), but its still an interesting point.
Teachers need to come up with more crafty solutions to getting test scores up.
Surely you don't mean that. Test scores aren't important. Teaching and learning are important.
Whether it is picking blueberries, curing cancer, driving a truck, or teaching, no matter the industry, no matter the pay, there is a labor shortage and no one is getting paid enough, lol.
Teachers have an incredible hard job and they aren't paid enough for what they do. And there is a shortage of teachers because of this. Increasing their pay is the right thing to do.
Yeah. It is incredibly difficult to teach kids how to be robotic corporate slaves in government programming centers.
God forbid they should be taught life skills. Such as teaching males how to MAKE and invest money. Or teaching girls how to wash clothes and cook meals.
In all the districts in the Houston area, STARTING pay for teachers with zero experience is in the high 50's to low 60's.
$58k with no experience and working 9 months isn't bad pay at all.
Wow. That's equivalent to a 22-year-old right out of college earning in the 70s. I know college graduates with 20 years of experience earning around that.
We've got to get away from this idea that teachers are so poorly paid.
Yep. Throw more money at at failed system in hopes that it will somehow get better.
Why are we still approaching primary education as if it's 1950 and we have no technology? How efficient is it to have a teacher attempting to teach 25 kids with different aptitudes for learning? 15% of the bright children are bored. 50% of the kids are learning. 20% of the kids are falling behind and 15% of the kids that don't want to be there are causing trouble.
We have computer technology. The subjects taught in our schools does not change frequently. Why not move to an online learning system similar to the Khan Academy? We could provide a new laptop to every student in the United States WITH internet access for a fraction of what our current system costs us. We would only have to produce learning content ONCE for every student in the US.
Children could learn at their own pace. There would be NO discipline issues, no bullying, no school shootings.
If students need additional tutoring each county could have "teacher/tutors" that make home visits. We could eliminate the cost of school buildings, school "administrators", the school bus fleet along with their drivers and mechanics and other support people for the school system.
If a parent is unable to supervise their child they could be sent to daycare at the parents expense. If a child wants to participate in sports or other activity they could join a community club.
We spend too much on our current system with very poor results.
One friend was earning $70,000 almost 25 years ago! She even bought a Lexus. So my point is that you can't just give every teacher a $13,000 raise. Some are doing quite well as it is.
100 percent agree. I am from Long Island, and our teachers are RETIRING with over 110k a year pension and making even more than that while working.
Fine to use money to shore up pay in some areas, but not a national program.
Many vote republican as well. If your friends earn in the 90's then they have been there for many, many years. It's a scale system for pay.
That's false. Teachers and college level educators vote solidly DEMOCRAT. Schools and or educational system has been ruined by UNIONS. The NEA and AFT.
