But only because they want to. What if a gay person wants to be heterosexual or vice-versa? Seems to me a person should have the freedom of being whatever sexual orientation they want.
Most gay people who do conversion therapy do it because they are pressured to by their family, social circles, church, and society. In a perfect world, gay people could be who they are and be accepted and wouldn't have to worry about constant judgment, condemnation, and rejection. Conversion therapy teaches you to suppress your sexuality and aspects of your personality that don't conform to stereotypical gender norms. It doesn't work to change your actual sexual orientation which is why most ex-gays eventually return to living openly gay, even if it's decades later. That is, if they make it that far without ending their own lives.
Because gay conversion therapy has been proven to not work and just make them even worse off mental health wise.
I agree with this. And if they get married and have kids for the sole purpose of putting on a facade for society, that makes things even worse because now there's other people involved.
Conversion therapy ruined my life. I would give almost anything to be the person I was before therapy again.

AFAIK, any adult who has concerns about their gender/sexuality can still go to a therapist to explore their issues, and hopefully resolve them. The thing is that the protocol known as "conversion therapy" has been found to usually not work, and in fact has been shown to increase personal angst.
You seem to think that people are/become straight/gay/trans on a whim. They don't. If your sexual desires are incongruent with your assigned sex or your assigned gender, you may be able to work it out on your own, or you may need some help. Just as with people who have a painful childhood or a physical disability - some need therapy to come to terms with it and move forward with their lives, some don't.
People who go into therapy to find a "mechanic" who can "fix" them to be "normal" are doomed to disappointment. It's not a "fix me" situation. It's a "discover-who-you-are-and-come-to-terms-with-it" situation.
In the case of transgenderism, most doctors, to protect themselves from liability, won't prescribe the hormones or do the surgery without evidence of (usually fairly extensive) therapy. But some transgender folks don't want the hormones or the surgery, and feel no need for the therapy. They just live it.

Yes it is a mental problem.. the brain goes off in the wrong direction and the gays believe a lie.. and others reinforce that lie . It is a behavior.. sex is like a drug.. they get hooked on it and think they are gay. It is not an identity.

Too bad Republicans can never be convinced of this fact. Much like they still insist that the earth is 6000 years old and that climate change is a sign of the End Times as opposed to a result of carbon pollution, they still insist that homosexuality is a choice that can be cured by a little prayer and therapy. The stories of actual gay people don't matter (we are demon possessed abominations worth of death anyways according to them) and licensed therapists and psychologists are all part of a Satanic leftist conspiracy to promote homosexuality. People like Jerry Falwell and Franklin Graham are the ultimate authority on this topic and they aren't to be questioned.

If it was a mere addiction it would be treatable...
Gay people can know they’re gay before they ever have sex.

Gay people can even abstain from sex and they are still gay if they are attracted to the same sex.
