A stage production in 1923 was adapted to film in 1969 over the same premise.

I love the Milton Friedman quip regarding tech progress and jobs:

"....At one of our dinners, Milton recalled traveling to an Asian country in the 1960s and visiting a worksite where a new canal was being built. He was shocked to see that, instead of modern tractors and earth movers, the workers had shovels. He asked why there were so few machines. The government bureaucrat explained: “You don’t understand. This is a jobs program.” To which Milton replied: “Oh, I thought you were trying to build a canal. If it’s jobs you want, then you should give these workers spoons, not shovels.....”

I support UBI if it completely replaces the current means tested welfare redistribution schemes we have in place now.

The real issue is monopolization of large industries. Break them up and you will get the jobs back.

Well, ignorant people tend to do that.

Automation creates jobs.

Yes, a robot welder displaces a human worker, but it also creates 1.3 jobs. That means if you replace three workers with robots, you've created 4 jobs and are +1 in job creation.

Yes, a kiosk at McDonald's will displace one worker, but it also creates 1.2 jobs, so replacing 5 workers with kiosks creates 6 jobs, so you're +1 job in job creation.

In the legal field, only 20% of Americans have access to legal services, whether that's for civil actions, criminal defense, family and estate planning or other legal services.

Automation will lower the cost of legal services, increasing access from 20% of Americans to 40% and possibly as high as 60% later on.

Increased access means increased Demand which increases the number of workers needed in the legal field.

People who don't understand automation generally panic, because, well, they don't understand it.

What if businesses decide to shut down because they refuse to pay more taxes?

Where is the government going to get tax revenue from?

Taxing robots would seem to make us less competitive with other nations. Perhaps instead a VAT on robot-assembled products, regardless of origin?

What are you smoking... seriously?

That will be the second or third job, robots will do themselves!
I see that left-wingers can't even understand simple economics anymore..... even if they have an economics degree (like AOC). Simple economics determines that profits are the focus of businesses.

A business corporation is NOT in chartered to create jobs, it is designed to make profits for its owners. A business would not be in business long if they did not make profits. A corporation that is focused on creating jobs will not be profitable if labor can't make more profit than they cost. Automation may make some jobs unprofitable. I know even Left wingers would not continue to own a company if it only lost money. They must be soulless also.

According to many studies, automation could result in job growth or loss, depending on the data used - here are the results of many of the studies in one chart from study published by MIT - https://www.technologyreview.com/s/6...-in-one-chart/

As you can see, no one agrees. Predictions range from optimistic to devastating, differing by tens of millions of jobs even when comparing similar time frames. We also found numerous predictions focused on losses in one industry, and many that were the result of a single technology, like autonomous vehicles.
I could have just referenced one of those studies that show growth but right now no-one knows. Bottom line - Automation DOES NOT necessarily mean job loss is the only result.

If you look at ATM installations vs Bank Tellers, ATMs started being used in the 70's and the number of tellers employed since then has steadily increased, there are now more than double the number of tellers that were employed BEFORE automation of the job was used.

These robots could result in the same thing, where automation creates jobs. This proposal is inserting itself to resolve an issue that may not exist and is very anti-free market. Also, right now, businesses are having a hard time finding workers, this could help that situation.

This is a bad Policy at its worst, attempt to use fear mongering to buy votes.

He didn't want to talk about it when it was pointed out that people and companies are leaving his city in large numbers.

It may be needed at some point but society doesn't change like that. Societal change lags behind technological change.

The **** will have to hit the fan in a big way before any major changes along these lines would be implemented.
