If you took 100% of the income of everyone who makes over $250K per year, you would only raise $900 billion.

In contrast, a VAT tax would raise $1.3 trillion. "Tax the rich" is a popular option for those interested in class warfare, not solutions.

Both would raise $2.2 trillion. That would solve a lot.

Should all of the free stuff end today the GOP would never win another election. Their base receives the bulk of the free stuff.

Just like a good Socialist... Communist. I suggest that you talk to people from the former Soviet Union, Poland, Hungary and so on. The honest ones will tell you that Socialism and Communism sucked.

As for countries with lower tax rates, I like how you Somalia and Botswana... Which, if I was going to play your Leftist game, is "racist,'" but I'm not. But the first thing that struck me was that both these countries have/had a Socialist/Communist past... I know it was done for the shock value and that you're most likely not a racist.

Trust me, if AMERICA goes Socialist and by 2025, their will be plenty of countries with a far lower tax rate like Costa Rica, Poland, Dominica, Hungary and Thailand. You will never get away from paying taxes, but paying over 50% WILL cause the rich to flee and renounce their U.S. Citizenship.

And once most of the rich, to include many, if not all of the Hollywood and New York City liberals take off to foreign lands, it WILL be the working Blue Collar Middle Class crowd paying for all this free sheet, so people can lay around studying Eastern European Folk Dancing or the Habits of Gay Elefants... Or simply nothing and smoking legalized weed, trying to "find" themselves.

Sorry, that's not my ideal of a great society and I pass on all that BS since it's nothing more than a scheme of the lazy to get a free ride... Nothing more and nothing less.

But Americans, as a collective... Using a favorate word of the Socialist and Communist, are stupid. But after the Middle Class is screwed over and stuck with a 50% or better tax bill to give all losers a free ride, that will end in the next cycle of national elections since there is far more workers doing the right thing and moving forward than bums who are looking for a free ride in life... While NEVER giving back anything.

How do you reconcile that with how when America was at its greatest we had a 91% top tax rate?

Many are "anti poor" as if it were a contagious disease that needs to be contained, like quarantine/isolation. But, "pro religious," which is not congruent w/the values and principles of any religious text anywhere in the world.

Then find a charity and send them money every month. What it really sounds like to me is that you would be happy to force everyone to pay more in taxes. There is a big difference.

I send money to the Disabled Veterans every month, but I don't think your taxes should be raised to FORCE you to send money to them if you don't want to. DAV Org will happily take that donation from you. So will March of Dimes and one I contribute to every year, WinNyc Org. Those two help women and babies. I love WinNyc. But I don't think I have the right to tax you to fund them. A lady I know was helped by them LA gets the press, but there are a lot of homeless in NYC and it is a lot rougher place to be on the streets.

People always say, I'd be happy to give. Don't say it, do it. You don't need taxes to give to the needy.

Not when the official deficit is almost a trillion, and the national debt is 22 times that.

Just curious, taxing the wealthy.
Are the only people in this thread who are upset about that, wealthy?

I'm not wealthy. I am retired, secure but definitely not rich. I am also not "upset" about it. I just realize it wont work. Pro socialist have been spewing this garbage for a hundred years. The rich are still rich and governments still overspend. The USA is 22 trillion in debt if you believe the BS number and in reality closer to 80 trillion. The total of all the US billionaires net worth is about 131 billion. 2018 federal deficit was 779 billion. We are not going to fix the national debt by taxing the rich. No way, no how.
