What is Trump going to do if manufacturers maintain current standards, meddle in the private market? He wouldn't do that, would he?
I believe if the manufacturers build cars to a stricter standard they are not being stopped. The issue is with California requiring it and with auto manufacturers colluding on what standards there are going to meet in the future.

CA FORCING them to make them to suit their tight wad standards is ILLEGAL when it comes to the Supremacy clause.
California did not set a National standard.
There is a factual argument here and a political argument which is what you are making.
Again there is nothing stopping Ford or Chevy from making different lines for different areas of the country and has been done with commercial trucks in California in the past.

Florida sets standards for Trailer homes due to increased risk of wind damage from hurricanes since 1992 but those homes are manufactured and sold in other states too. Should Florida be banned from doing so and tell it’s citizens to just pray about it?

You realize this action could cascade to items outside of cars, slippery slope we are playing on.

They aren't setting standards for the country. They are setting standards for themselves. The fact that car manufacturers CHOOSE to use those standards for the country is the car manufacturers' choice. And why is it so important to the Trump administration to lower the standards?

Moreover, what happens about other issues where federal standards and state standards aren't exact matches? When the federal government charges states over having stricter standards, the question becomes why? As long as the states meet the minimal requirements the federal government sets, why is it an issue?

Which begs the question, why does Trump want to lower them?

EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler:
"We embrace federalism and the role of the states, but federalism does not mean that one state can dictate standards for the nation," EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler said during a speech ahead of the move Tuesday.

"To borrow from Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry, CAFE does not stand for California Assumes Federal Empowerment. So we will be moving forward with one national standard very soon. We will be taking joint action with the Department of Transportation to bring clarity to the proper – and improper – scope and use of the Clean Air Act preemption waiver, he continued. "Our actions will not impact California’s health-based standards and programs. California will be able to keep in place and enforce programs to address smog and other forms of air pollution caused by motor vehicles. This will allow the State to redouble its efforts to address its air quality problems and finally achieve compliance with EPA’s National Ambient Air Quality Standards."

So California will still be allowed to regulate the smog and Clean Air aspects of these regulations. But they will not be allowed to regulate other vehicle related standards. Which should put to bed any concerns anyone has about satisfying the language included in the statute.

Said it before, never ever believe conservatives when they claim they want small government. What they want is government that accommodates them.

Why does Trump do anything? To get revenge on anyone not worshipping at his altar.

This is another example of talking out of both sides of your mouth. I thought you righties were all for State Rights? Unless it’s a liberal state?

The last two years of this administration and GOP response is made this very evident. Libertarians must be pulling their eye balls out, thought they were getting a change after Obama. Nope just more nonsense fiscal policy and consolidation of power to the executive branch from a weak congress.

This article is from CNN. Please keep that in mind, as that obviously increases the likelihood that it could be 'Fake news'.

Its not the individual states right to set national standards. Its the federal government obligation according to the Commerce Clause (Article1, Section 8, Clause 3) to set the standards.
