DeKALB – Video of an alleged hate-crime incident outside the Hopkins Pool on June 5 shows Jeremy Lloyd and a girl walking away from a group of boys just before they catch up and a fight breaks out.
The video shows one of the boys in the group punch Lloyd. Another boy throws a punch, then grabs Lloyd by the waist and they tumble together down a hill. Others in the group surround Lloyd. The camera feed goes askew at this point, while screams erupt from the crowd of teens, and someone shouts "he's got a knife!"
Three teenage boys were wounded in the incident. Prosecutors say they suffered slash wounds at the hands of Lloyd, 18, of the 800 block of West Hillcrest Drive in DeKalb, who initially faced several assault charges. Those charges were dropped, with DeKalb County prosecutors instead asked he be charged with a hate crime. Authorities say Lloyd, who is white, repeatedly referred to black boys in the fight using a racial slur.
Our sister station WLBK reports that an 18-year-old DeKalb man is charged with hate crime following a stabbing Wednesday in Hopkins Park in DeKalb, but aggravated battery charges he was initially facing have been dropped.
In court documents, DeKalb Police say witnesses told them that a suspect later identified as Jeremy Lloyd had been calling an African American minor the N-word.
Police say the witnesses that they talked to after being called to Hopkins Park shortly after 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday night also said Lloyd asked the minor to fight and threatened to kill him.
DeKalb Police Cmdr. Bob Redel says the stabbing happened following an altercation between one person and a group of people. Redel has said a knife was used.
Police say witnesses told police that Lloyd had left the park in a vehicle and provided descriptions. The vehicle was found by officers.
Police say Lloyd told officers that he went to Hopkins Park to confront the minor, and police say Lloyd called the minor the N-word during the interview.
Police say another minor also identified Lloyd in a photo lineup.
Lloyd was arrested and taken to the DeKalb County Jail.
Lloyd was initially charged with aggravated battery to a child, three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and three counts of aggravated battery that caused great bodily harm, but all those charges were dismissed by the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office and Lloyd has been charged with a felony count of a hate crime.
State’s Attorney Rick Amato says the charges were dismissed based on new evidence that surfaced Thursday morning. Amato says the most appropriate charge is hate crime; although, he says the matter is still under investigation.
Amato says Lloyd has been ordered to have no contact with the three minors who were injured.
Initially, two people went to the hospital following the stabbing, but Redel says a third person went to the hospital later. He says all of their injuries were not life-threatening.
So let me get this straight OP? White guy ADMITS to police that he went to the park with a knife to CONFRONT a minor, gets into verbal altercation with a minor, calls him racial slurs, asks to fight and threatens to kill the minor. Minors fight white guy.
And somehow white guy is the victim and the minor he came to the park to confront and threatened to kill and others who jumped in somehow have privilege?
Stop it. Sounds like someone who intended to start a fight and got one. All of them have poor behavior. White guy was charged because he was the aggressor.

Hate crime? Looks like self defense to me. The kids attacking him are lucky he didn’t have a gun.
How is it self defense when he admitted that he went to the park to confront the minor and threatened to kill him? He might not have thrown the first punch him but he went with a knife to confront a minor.

Kudos for injecting facts into an otherwise extremely fact-free and biased thread.

In the video, he was walking away. How is one a threat when walking away? How does that work?
