South Africa has 79 - building 24 more... Total 103
India has 589 - building 446 more... Total 1036
Philippines has 19 - building 60 more... Total 79
South Korea has 58 - building 26 more... Total 84
Japan has 90 - building 45 more... Total 135
China has 2,363 - building 1,171 more... Total 3,534
That’s 5,615 projected coal powered plants in just 8 countries.
USA has 15 - building 0 more...Total 15
And Democrat politicians with their "green new deal” want to shut down those 15 plants in order to "save” the planet.
Because you could not get many Republicans off the sofa last November, the Socialist party now runs the U.S. House Of Representatives.
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”
This is EXCELLENT!! I knew the rough idea about the number of coal plants, but had not yet seen actual numbers until now.
This makes the point. Whatever the USA does or doesn’t do won’t make a Tinker’s Dam regarding CO2 unless the rest of the world – especially China and India – does reduce coal-fired power plants, too.
The whole “global warming” and “climate change”
gambits by Democrats are to create a *supposedly*sound, scientific basis to justify a federal government power-grab and the passage of MORE laws to increase taxes and increased control of the privately owned power industry and its distribution. Never forget the *main* motivation they have!
In total, 289 (coal plants) have closed since 2010, comprising 40 percent of the US's coal power capacity, while an additional 241 plants remain open.
A coal power plant that began running in Alaska a few weeks ago is the only new installation to open since Trump took office, the non-profit said.
This article is from May 2019.
So it is true that only one plant has opened in the US and more than half have closed in the last 9 years, but we have more than 15 coal fired power plants.
The coal fired plants in the U.S. are being replaced as their useful life comes to an end by NATURAL GAS which is cheap and abundant. So our coal industry will be exporting more and more of the coal which helps our Balance of Trade (trade deficit). It also employs workers.
But, yes, many countries around the world are building more and relying on coal. It doesn't matter to the Democrats and activists in the U.S. They just want an excuse for more income and wealth redistribution, and man made climate change is the excuse DU JOUR.

The company I retired from has closed approximately 25 , maybe more. Some were at the end of life stage, but most were closed because of the obuma era clean air regs. It was simply cheaper to build new gas fired plants than meet the impending clean air regulations.. This is all good, until we have a natural gas shortage. There was a lot of comfort in having a three month supply of fuel out behind the plant. As far as I know none of the gas fired plants store any fuel.
In terms of the Europe, over one third of coal plants are in Germany, whilst Poland and Eastern Europe still have a number of coal plants. However coal as a power source has declined 19% in Europe this year alone, and the UK has only fove coal stations left and plans to phase out coal by 2025, whilst other European countries have a traget of 2030.
Also check the map here. It shows the number of coal plants around the world and those that are closing, opening and operating. The EU and the USA are seeing far more coal plants closing that opening.
No one is saying that the US can solve the climate crisis alone. If the global community does not work together we are all screwed. That does not mean however that we give up and do nothing. We should be leaders in fighting climate change and not obstructors. That is the bottom line.
