A major cruise line faced pirates but they used their noise weapons which basically blows out the offenders eardrums and makes an assault very painful. the vessel left the area. I would have no qualms with pirates being hunted and executed... as un-liberal as that sounds. The Chinese did it when one of their boats was hijacked. with in 2 weeks a public execution of the dozen or so pirates. ...problem solved. Bet they haven't had any since. Rather barbaric but no less so than them having killed the crew.

If they dont attack us leave them alone, if they do hunt them down kill them.
Send in black ops and contractors no need for full miltary operations same should be done with terrorists and Osama.

Not a simple question ..it varies all over the place. For example if you're crusing the islands you cross any number of different waters each with completly different regulations.

For example...at some ports of call you only have to declare the weapon on a manifesto and that's that. ON the other hand...
There are some places that require you to notify,in writing months in advance of your intentions to visit and that you have weapon(s) on board. Some places want a full count of every round of ammunition in addition the the weapon description and serial number. Some places require you notify the customs agents upon entering their waters and they will sometimes even come out, meet you, board your vessel and do a complete check of weapons, ammo etc before you get near land !!
Someone mentioned Mexico ...if you proceed directly to the harbor master/customs folks and turn in a weapon etc they will still arrest you and impound EVERYTHING unless you can prove you notified them in writing in advance !!

Like I said ..not a simple thing to deal with.

Here's a link to a listing with a brief description of various places around the world and the basics of compling with their regulations.

Firearms Regulations by Country - Cruisers & Sailing Forums

And remember while reading...in most cases .....if you've entered their waters...you've entered their country....and thus subject to their regulations.

As long as you don't come into anyone's waters. Most boats spend some time in port. When you come into a country's port you have to check in at customs and declare all weapons among other things.

{JBrown gave a more complete explanation.} Also worth noting is that most deaths from international piracy of yachts and sailboats comes from resisting. I.e. Pete Blake's death in Brazil, where he violently resisted and was killed. No one else was badly injured, though two crew member suffer minor knife wounds.

Part of the problem is that with the end of the Cold War the 2 dominant navies (the US Navy and the UK's Royal Navy) have both been significantly downsized and no longer as capable of providing an international presence as they were in years past.

I do believe there is some sort of special task force (made up of US Navy, UK Royal Navy, French Navy, Egyptian Navy, Royal Saudi Navy and the Royal Netherlands Navy, etc) in the Red Sea to stop the Somali pirates but they are bound by rules of engagement that pretty much make their presence useless.

As for the Straits of Malacca ... that area has always been a haven to pirates, smugglers, terrorists, etc.

tactic of the weak is victim card, get the enemy to commit something for which they will be critized . human shield works, gets used all the time in the mid east.
our weak spot is we are kind and sensative. we are not ruthless, they are.
americans will hesitate to shoot bek they are ordered to do so, getsem killed a lot.
for that matter why do we look at somalia, same games are played right here.

Thats the problem with us.

Wars are not won by being nice and soft. War is hell and the only way to win is to cripple the enemy and make them beg for peace ... "make them so sick of war that generations will pass before they again think of it" as history's first "modern" general once said.

The World has ignored Somali for long and contributed to the bloodshed in Somalia by inviting regional dictators to usher another era of death and destruction in Somalia. We don't need robbers adding on to our misery. The pirates operate from small boats that can't go too far from shore. The ships are almost always stealing from Somali waters. Again, I have ZERO sympathy for them.
