I'm wondering what "gay sex" is. It's my understanding that gay people and straight people engage in a lot of different types of sexual activity. I don't know how gays can engage in some form of sex that heterosexuals can't and don't engage in.

Yep, that's one (pretty large) reason why it's absurd to claim that "gay sex" is much more likely to result in the transmission of the HIV virus than anything else.

Maybe they are talking about normal people sex vs. "fundamentalist christian" sex. That's a scary thought.

First off, this isn't a gay issue, so knock off that discussion immediately.

Second, I believe the story to be credible. It doesn't mean that the military as an institution drums out non-believers, but I don't think it is difficult to find specific incidents of this type of conduct. Even the Air Force Chaplains had a problem, this stuff does sometimes happen:
