This happened more than two weeks ago but I didn't hear about it until my Japanese wife mentioned it today. Apparently it's been widely reported in Japanese language media. Some American outlets are now covering it, but most are spinning this Japanese musician's encounter with 8 New York "young people" as an anti-Chinese COVID attack. Unno suffered severe injuries and may never play professionally again.

'One of the brightest lights in jazz piano’: Renowned Japanese jazz pianist attacked by teens in NYC subway station
Tadataka Unno, 40, was leaving the W. 135th station near St. Nicholas Park around 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 27 and tried to get around a group of teens blocking the exit turnstile. One of the girls pushed him, claiming that the musician had bumped into her, cops said.
“My girl is pregnant!” her boyfriend screamed, as he repeatedly punched Unno in the head, police said.
The musician, known to friends as Tada, tried to scramble out of the station but the enraged teen knocked him on the ground and screamed “Chinese!” police sources said.
Jazz pianist Benny Green described Unno as a “gentle and non-violent person.”
“I just can’t imagine him having done anything to incite an altercation,” Green wrote on Facebook. “Sometimes bad things happen to really good and kind, innocent people who mind their own business and never bother others.”
No word on the teens? They probably hang out there or use that same place all the time,
living in the neighborhood, right?
No cameras mentioned?
I would love to see posters offering a reward in the exact spot and area!
Even $500 is a fortune for a teen that might feel guilty and want to tell the
authorities...or just know 'something'. In a group there is usually one that didn't want to go along with it.
I'd donate to that on GoFundMe.
This falls under 'other controversies', sure enough, and smacks of politics and a hate crime...to me.
What's going on in NYC is not normal. People are fleeing. Folks from elsewhere need to take precautions and think carefully before visiting. Maybe postpone your visit. If the leadership of NYC are not willing to take the crime problem seriously, than I seriously would avoid visiting until new, more responsible leadership is voted in.
