A law professor set it out quite nicely. This is a digest of his article. He has a point.
"1. Liberals believe individuals should doubt their own truths and consider fairly and open-mindedly the truths of others. This is at the very heart of liberalism. Liberals understand, as Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes once observed, that "time has upset many fighting faiths." Liberals are skeptical of censorship and celebrate free and open debate.
Umm.... your professor is either old or forgetful... Liberalism has CHANGED from those principles into something completely different... the Liberalism of TODAY is what we think of Socialism right now... the Liberalism of yesteryears (the ones your professor is talking about) is the Libertarianism of today... so if you are supporting the "liberalism" of today, you are generally opposed to most of those principles you stated above... those are Libertarian values... that is the value of oneself, responsbility, freedom, and less government interfering with our liberties... the liberalism of today is not about freedoms or anything like that... it is now called "social liberalism"... which is completely different from what we called liberalism back then... you can read about it here...

Well, the author is in his early sixties and wrote that take in May. I am very familiar with conservative thought in the sixties, also. Now conservatives would have you believe they invented the Civil Rights movement.
A Liberal is someone who gives away everything he doesn't own.
Doesn't get any simpler than that.
Item #6 stated:
Liberals believe government has a fundamental responsibility to help those who are less fortunate. It is liberals who have supported and continue to support government programs to improve health care, education, social security, job training and welfare for the neediest members of society.
Based upon your observation, it seems that you agree that this aspect is part of the liberal philosophy.

If you look at the real liberals they in fact believe that we shoulkd have invaded Iraq to free the epole. Liberal now means mostly isolationism and spending all money on special interest if your a democrat. Their favorite special interest is themelves mand they want that money from the top 70%.
Hm. I, personally, think liberals are just saying they are liberals for the image.
Honestly. For those who donate to Hospitals, Museums - Are they really donating because they like the case? Or, Are they donating because they want their name on it?
I think the best short definition for a liberal is a socialist/communist.
A large, all powerful government that, supposedly, cares for the people as the government sees fit with repressive taxation. With respect to foreign policy, isolationist.
However, liberals in this country have taken it upon themselves to protect the environment- a cause I strongly support.
Liberals have a very loose rendering of the constitution (some of it good and some of it bad) and they have a natural mistrust of Christianity.
