A group of us were talking about this the other day.
A news story was on, in which a man was complaining that the food stamps given were not enough to live on. The news reporter followed him outside, and continued to talk to the man as he loaded the groceries into his late model SUV.
Food stamps need to be cut back and restricted like WIC... only certain approved items should be allowed to be bought. Chips, prepared foods, ice cream, etc. should NOT be allowed. These items cost more to begin with, and aren't nutricious.
My family had foodstamps for three months when my father became disabled and my mother was in the process of having my youngest brother. It was hard times, but as soon as they could, they dumped the foodstamps and paid for their own food again. It was a safety net -- not a way of life.
Foodstamps are supposed to SUPPLEMENT a food budget, not BE a food budget.
Food Stamps exist to support the agricultural and food supply industries. Feeding people is incidental to this subsidy. The program would accomplish its goals if the buyers just stuffed the groceries into the trash.
Food stamps are likely to be discontinued (certainly under McCain) as the equally subsidized Ethanol fuels program has taken up the overproduction of grain in the Midwest. Food stamps supported demand is no longer required so the program will be left to die.
I have one thing to say about this article. It is BS. First of all it's on CNN.
CNN = Communist News Network.
These are the same stories they come up with every election year looking for ways to show how bad things are for the "poor". I'm sure if we looked at the food bill we would find wasteful products and also see if she is getting other food sources and income via welfare checks. I am surprised they didn't ask at the end of the article if she is voting for Obama.
Well I'm guessing we should end this thread, since it's so apparent that the poor are always wrong (at least in the sight of those who aren't--or aren't at the moment).
And obviously there is only one way to get through hard times. Guess we should all be like the person who took their kids to work with them (provided one has a damn car).
And it also speaks volumes as to why this country goes to every corner of the world to help THOSE poor...and pi$$es on our own.
Yeah, obviously, if the poor would all just get paper routes we wouldn't need to provide any subsidy to ensure that children living in poverty get to eat. Those children should get paper routes too.

We secretly despise our own.
Right?
I agree would should stop funding those on every corner of the world. I also think this welfare system and those on it abuse it, aren't responsible people and believe they are entitled to parts of my paycheck. The solution to feeding the hungry should not be a system built on hand outs. The solution to feeding the hungry is work, and compassion none of which you will find in a food stamp program. Those who believe the federal government will take care of them are those believe in socialism.

Well, compassion, no. But are you going to get compassion from any gov't program? LOL
As for work, it's been reiterated her over and over but food stamp recipients in general are REQUIRED to be either A) working or B) engaging in work related activities (work search).
There are more food stamp recipients working now than ever before. Please stop perpetuating the myth that most food stamp recipients don't work. Thanks!
A woman I know who was a widow and about 75 years old recieved $800 a month from social security. She did not own a home or have any investments. She went to see if she could get food stamps because she was having a hard time paying rent and utilities and being able to buy food. She was told that at $800 monthly income she qualified for $12 a month in food stamps!!! Of course thats good old North Carolina. I just don't understand it all anymore...
Can we just merge this thread with "american ignorance?"
