1. 9/11 - includes things like WOT, we're fighting 'em there so we don't have to fight 'em here, they want to convert the world to Muslim, they want all Americans dead, they hate us for our freedom, etc.

2. Oil - includes things like the US wants to establish hegemony in the region in order to control the oil and to ensure that emerging behemoths like China and India don't get too much of it as the US has its needs for oil. We like cheap gas at home, we didn't plan for alternative sources of energy as we should have, etc

I'd say
20% Stubbornness
20% for our
"honor"
55% oil
5% so we can have a nice sized base in the middle of the middle east.

Yeah, but I'm really trying to get a handle on just what people think. I think it's important to establish just WHY we are there. Now, Bush's own mental illness issues are for another thread.

Well, who would you rather have control the oil? Us or them? Really boils down to this, if you want to boil it down like this.

Do you want to be driving a vehicle in 10 years or do you want the Middle East to be the only region that can?

It's pretty sad when Americans hold "honor" so cheap, too.

My opinion is so that we have a base of operation set smack dab in the mid-east/muslim world. I really think that was the prime goal the entire time.

I've always said it was about the "oil" when we invaded Iraq... everyone seems to think it was "terrorism" and protecting America... when did the government ever protect anything but corporate interests in the last couple centuries? It was about oil, plain and simple... especially when you talk to domestic oil distributors before invading Iraq.. and "pushed" the new Iraq government to give control of their oil fields to these domestic oil companies AFTER we took over.. it was the oil... duh..

And again...what is so wrong, or different from history, when a powerful, wealthy nation sees a resource that it needs to stay powerful and wealthy, tries to establish fair trade and diplomatic relations with the countries that countrol the resource, sees that the resource is controlled more and more by dangerous people with no desire to fairly trade/sell it's resource, so the nation moves in to protect, or even to control, what is in its best interests?

What is so terribly wrong with this? That is how nations stay powerful and wealthy. If you want to live in a poor, weak country...hey, be my guest...but it ain't as fun, I guarantee.

Hey, we tried...for a long time, to not act like it was OUR oil. We tried to be a good boy and play nice. That didn't work.
