Hear, hear! I raise my glass to you, silas. Hopefully ANWR will soon be bustling to the tune of domestic oil production.

And that doesn't mean I'm in favor of every American driving a Hummer, everyone, just to let you know!

Happy reading:
The Seattle Times: Local News: Where would ANWR oil go?

To exploit ANWR oil in the future (which won't actually make much of a change in supplies), Alaska should get to building more of its own REFINING capacity. (California and the U.S. West Coast doesn't have excess refining capacity any more.) Else, ANWR oil just might be EXPORTED, spare me from the thought!

Silas, I believe that the cost is going to come down pretty rapidly, and our drilling will only be part of the greater short term solution.

Canada's Alberta region has a load of oil sand, enough to meet the growing world needs for decades (and perhaps a century). Canada wants the royalties from this oil. The problem is time lag, the prices are high enough today to make extracting this very profitable and attractive, but the equipment needed to extract in sufficient quantities isn't fully operational yet. The per barrel cost to extract and process this oil sand into a finished product is estimated as follows (Pg 17 for those not inclined to read the entire report):

For in situ bitumen production, estimated costs ranged from $4.82- $8.57/bbl for investment, and (excluding taxes and royalties) $13.81- $15.47/bbl for total production.

A resource whose time has come? The Alberta oil sands as an economic resource. | Energy & Utilities > Oil & Gas Industry from AllBusiness.com

Well first of all, as a Wash state resident we hardly believe anything in the Seattle times! It is just nonsense to say that it wouldnt actually change supply, every additional drop on the market will make a difference, and absolutely Alaska should be building refineries so should North Dakota Wyoming, Colorado, Florida............

Excellent!! Instead of Super Highways we should be building super pipelines into Canada and Mexico, get that oil from their countries to ours as fast as possible. Hey think of the jobs that would create!!

All it takes is the will to go and get it out from the ground and process it. The technology already exists.

We just need the right leadership.

The American government and right leadership are oxymorons... American's can't pick the right leadership when they prefer candidates who can help them instead of the country...

I just posted a USGS study about exactly how many millions of barrels, (10,000 or more), probably BILLIONS of barrels of oil we'd get from areas in and around ANWR in another thread.
However, the thought that politicians might indeed export new found domestic oil in future is really freakin' scary, I totally agree with you there! And you're right...we need to build refineries. Again...political roadblocks from liberal lobbies all over this one.
