My answer to why would be low character. I've known many poor people (By USA standards) who don't have two nickels to rub together yet they are not out there committing crimes.

In another thread someone wrote something along the lines of ' unless you self sabotage with drugs and other harmful behaviors , you should be able to do OK here in the USA". Of course health plays a role, and the health of your loved ones. But that is pretty much true.

Nuts is nuts. End of story.
Meds and therapy are bandaids.
The majority of these people should be institutionalized.
Not let loose in society so they can live a “normal” life and be treated equal.
It’s rubbish.

First of all, you can't give the death penalty for a crime in which there is no death.
Second, alot of violent criminals don't care if they live or die. They could get killed today, and more violent criminals will be born and raised tomorrow.

The death penalty (for extreme crimes) guarantees they won't be repeat offenders...

Indeed. However, it doesn't seem to deter future criminals. Prevention is what I'm aiming for. And alot of violent criminals don't care either way if their make it to 30 or now. Now, life in prison without the possibility of parole also guarantees no repeat offenders.

Something else. As I've mentioned before, the death penalty is used for murder, not crimes where no death occurred. And in America, giving the death penalty for most non-fatal crimes is considered cruel and unusual punishment according to the Constitution.

US prisons would disgrace a 3rd world nation, and countries with less crime have much better prison conditions, much shorter sentences and - this one is important - much lower recidivism rates.

They also at least attempt to have working social safety nets, better-trained police, a firearms culture reflected in sane weapons laws and access to mental health care. But that's not a conversation America is ready for.

1/3 of our pop has been arrested. So is it criminal minds, our violent angry culture, our horrible disposition (as in those who break airline steward’s teeth) , our sense of entitlement or mis-applied laws and punishment. Maybe suppression, mental illness, poverty and ignorance? And then there is substance abuse, and just plain evil hearts.
I think all apply, and access to weapons seems to be the main part of mass killings. So which one can we try to control ?

As the left like to whine all the time, we have the highest per-capita number of people in prison of any country (I haven't verified this) and we all know just how soft our crime laws and sentences are, and how often criminals are turned free with a minimal sentence. We have far, far more criminals than the few unlucky ones that actually, through some miracle, end up in prison. And these days, we won't even hold violent criminals on bail (ones where bail shouldn't be an option). So the real, serious question-why does this country produce so many criminals? Why are so many willing to commit crimes-do they not concern themselves with the consequences? And how do our sentences compare to other nations for similar crimes? Why so little value for human life in this country? We are more concerned with tiny bald eagles than tiny humans, let alone children and adults.
We have criminals all over the world. The difference is We still have a justice system to bust them and a 24/7 sensationalism media that are not in the pockets of criminals . I know many countries that they won't even bother to report or investigate rapes, thefts, missing persons or even murder because they don't have the resources to investigate or prosecute or too corrupt or inept. Go checkout Mexico, Guatemala, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and that's just on this continent. Go check out countries in Africa and Asia. India, China, Middle East countries, Russia, Philippines and many more.

People here are so much in their own bubble that they hate their own country.
