This is a freaking discussion thread (distributed, asynchronous), not a debate event. Accept a little flexibility in assertions and responses and in what order they are given.

Define your terms, and you'll get a decent response from me.

You think there is a demand for your product or service. You develop the idea and start your business. You were right. The demand is there - you raise your prices a little, the demand continues. At some point though, after raising your prices, the demand goes down - you hit the top of the "market" - the free market.

Your product / service is good - others enter into the arena. Now, we have competition - and everyone starts trying to out do one another - better product / service - some new bell and whistle. You compete with pricing - the rebates - the "sale of the century"

But perhaps the demand goes down - and while it was a "sellers" market, it now becomes a "buyers" market - they can get that product / service cheaper and cheaper.

Then, it turns - demand flies - demand exceeds supply! Prices skyrocket. It is now a "sellers" market once again.

And the cycle starts again.

Stay with the fan club! Its a great ride.

If we quite buying the oil there are lots of countires just wait to gobble it u. China buys oil comanues just for their future oil holdignsd and contracts. In the end the free market if inhampered by the crazy no drilling democrats will give us oil until it runs out in teh future. The same congress wiill keep playing politics has usuall with alternative trying to play pork fat games with it.The democrats are just tryng to keep the increasing heat off themselves as people see that we should have never stopped nuclear 25 years ago as france didn't and we are behind other countries that are drilling for oil and raking in the money and jobs.Their economies are booming while much of this country prey and cling to a vision of years goneby that will not return in bitterness. Maybe this is what Obama meant.

When do we eat meat and potatoes again instead of ready-to-eat? Is your income dependent on a luxury or is it basic necessity? Groceries will close isles when they only sell staples...

Don't worry about the price of oil. There will be no need and therefore the price will fall back, only hope that our capitalists will have squirrelled away enough to reopen, resupply, re, re, re...

Don't let the government get involved. We the people will fix all the problems simply by choosing to buy or to deny.

I live at home with very little electricity, I post only from work and I live off grid. I hunt for the majority of my food, farm for most of the rest and only buy what is truly needed at the store.
This is not something I had planned on in my life, but I have been living this way since 1994. it is not for everyone as not everyone can live without alot of power and live off the land.
If TSHTF ever happened, then I figure 60%+ of the population of the USA would be going hungry inside of 2 weeks, 25% would be going hungry inside of 1 month, 5% would be going hungry inside of 6 months and the rest would be well fed until that crisis is over.
Too many people believe that if something happens the federal goverment will bail them out. well people I am here to tell you that the goverment does not even have to show up. also think about if something happens, you might be left out hungry for months until some sort of order can be restored.
the best thing to do is move out of the city, learn to farm, can and live without help from anyone and take care of yourself without any help at all.
I will say that it is not easy, but it can be done.

PS. I have on hand enough food and supplies to feed my family and I for 52 months, this is something that my family has been working at since 1996.
I hope to get it to 72 months before 2010.

PPS. if anyone needs links or other information on how to get started on this, throw me a PM.

I am thinking about doing the same thing.... hoarding non-perishable food as much as possible... I know we are in for a major food crisis probably in several decades... I want to be able to support my family through this crisis... unless we stop the stem of entitlements, there won't be any food left and America will look like eastern europe... socialism does what it does best, it leaves corruption... unchecked.. The U.S. constitution was designed to prevent that and I believe the forefathers wrote it in that manner to prevent corruption... with a lot of checks and balances... unfortunately, Congress and the president no longer feels that they need to follow the constitution anymore... i might as well prepare myself...

This is mentioned by the man himself and in his book Crash Proof.
