"Under God" was added during the communist witch hunt. Some members of congress thought it would force communists to show themselves because they would not say the pledge if it included "under God" since they did not believe in God.

Well it was written by a socialist, would expect red states to want to axe it.

How a Socialist Ended Up Writing the Pledge of Allegiance

Good, pledge of allegiance is just cringe. We are a patriotic great nation and stuff like the pledge of Alligience should be regulated to places like China, North Korea, etc. A country like ours doesn’t need it.

I think they're being dramatic.

I love the pledge, the flag , all that.
I am not religious yet still don't mind the under God part.

I get that the Country was founded by people who were religious so it makes sense that it's there.

People trying to shame others for being patriotic..gasp.

Nah. Quite happy here. Doesn't change that it's a bit weird.

"under God" was added long after it was written.

oh,..I didn't realize that, or have forgotten. It doesn't bother me either way, as I am not religious.
So maybe that other post had the right idea to just not say that part.

That's probably the least important part, imho.

I remember saying it as a child in the 1960s. We were taught from the start that saying "Under God" was optional. You could hear that many kids didn't say it because the volume of recital would drop at that point.

ETA: ND is right, it definitely does not include those who do not believe in a deity, so I'm all for that. Those words should never have been added at all.

Yes. I said the pledge every morning in school as well. I was in NJ. I learned it with the "under God" phrase. Funny thing is, when I went home the day I had learned the pledge, my parents asked if I learned it the new way or the old way. That puzzled me... I never knew the old way. LOL. I was in first grade in 1954.
