I understand why jails and prisons record the phone calls of inmates. In fact, I do not even think inmates ought to be able to make calls to anybody but their lawyers. But that is not the issue. The issue is the release of the tapes of Nick Hogan's calls to his family- which he assumed would not be all over TV- to the TV tabloid shows. This to me goes over the line of decency. It is one thing for law enforcement to listen in but another to release an inmates calls to the world. While he might be guilty, his grandmother and other family and friends did nothing.
