My brother has a very bad cold, his doctor told him to test for covid and if he has it, take vitamin C and zinc and stay in for 5 days. He's vaccinated and boosted. Why isn't the doctor recommending Paxlovid if he has covid? Waiting 5 days would be too late to take Paxlovid. What if he tests negative for covid, but has the flu or RSV instead? Shouldn't he go to Urgent Care to test for covid, the flu, or RSV to get proper treatment? What is the standard protocol for covid now?

Is he dying? If not, then he should stay home and quit wasting resources on people who actually need treatment to prevent them from dying.

People at risk (elderly, immune issues) routinely get Paxlovid. He can always ask for it or ask his doctor why not. Probably that would be better than asking same on a forum overpopulated with anti-vaxxers and science deniers.

FWIW, the people I know who took Paxlovid all followed the pattern of having positive home test - then off to urgent care where they give you another test - if positive you get a prescription for Paxlovid. Paxlovid is not in short supply and the prescription is free.

Paxlovid typically is used for the elderly -- 65 and above. If your brother falls in that category, then he should insist his doctor give it to him.

Props to the doc for the Vit C and zinc recommendation. I would also add D3 to that list.

He doesn't need to go to Urgent Care to get tested. I think you can get the home tests still.

On the D3, yes by all means but apparently it's melatonin that could be what's needed more. That's according to the medical profession who have done tests. It won't do any harm anyway. A D3 deficiency goes along with a melatonin deficiency as they are both a product of sunshine.

Monitor his temperature and his breathing. If he begins to have shortness of breath or "air hunger" he should go the ER without delay.

RSV and flu have similar symptoms. Have him drink plenty of water avoid alcohol and any type of smoking.

Does he have a "bad cold", or does he need to be hospitalized? I think people forgot what it's like to be sick, with normal viruses that can take up to 14 days to clear.

Why has he not taken a Covid test if he's that concerned? Wouldn't that clear everything up right away? They're sold OTC, can be taken in 5 minutes.

Because he hasn't had a positive test I presume.

I had a positive at home test, 102F fever, called up doctor, wrote the Paxlovid script and told me not to take statin while on it.

Update on my brother, it turns out his son tested positive, he had a sore throat, stayed in for 3 days, and went back to college. My brother was exposed to his sick son. He went to two urgent cares, both had 3 hour waits, so he didn't get tested. In the meantime he has no fever, his cough went away, and his friend is bringing him a covid testing kit today, he's staying in just in case his positive.

Today I read the testing kits aren't that sensitive to Omicron, so maybe testing is a waste if it isn't accurate.
