What happens is each side claims I belong to the other side every time I hold their side accountable.
No one seems to be able to grasp the idea some of us are independent and not beholden to any political party.
For me, it's country over party. For others, it's party over country.
Liberals are not what you expect them to be.
Conservatives are not what you expect them to be.
The reason is that people cannot be neatly put into little boxes. People are not monolithic thinkers. Everyone has different ideas on any given topic. You will not find a group of people who all agree on some list of items that you want to label as conservative or liberal.
Since JFK both parties have shifted to the left. JFK today would no doubt be a Republican.
Today JFK would be considered extremely far right wing.
His rhetoric, yes. Those were conservative times and he had to talk accordingly. His actions were quite at variance. The test-ban treaty (while admittedly started during the Eisenhower years) were one example. His failure to back the Cuban refugees at the Bay of Pigs another. And, what about Quemoy and Matsu?
