When it comes down to it at the end of the day he probably has the votes. It will likely take several rounds, but he will get there. Not to mention, what other Republican do you think could get enough votes?

To achieve his goal, he is going to have to make deals with so many factions in the House. Will he be able to wrangle all those factions when he is actually Speaker? To get the backing of one group, he'll have to tick off another ON EVERY SINGLE VOTE. It's going to be a miserable two years and in the end, he will accomplish nothing of consequence.

As for Gingritch, IMHO he was the one that started us down the path to the divided country we have today. There was a time when members of Congress actually had the people as their first concern, understanding that compromise was necessary for a functioning government rather than having unbending beliefs that aren't the in the best interest of the country.

Even Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neill understood that compromise is key in government. They may have been polar opposites in terms of their beliefs but they were willing to put them aside to get things done.
McCarthy would sell his soul to the devil if it means becoming speaker.

McCarthy will end up cutting some deals with the holdouts and become speaker.
McCarthy has already agreed to some rule changes that diminishes the power of the Speaker. I dont know the details, & how significant his concession is though.

I'd prefer somebody else, but I think we'll wind up with McCarthy.

Are Republicans happy with that choice.

So Pelosi was a controversial Speaker but she owned her spot.

When was the last Republican who was Speaker have the kind of power and influence she did. I'm not a Pelosi fan but there is no knocking her influence.

Was it Newt Gingrich?
Even Newt Gingrich stepped down in 1998 with the party in chaos. Boehner, Ryan all had a hard time with the right wing of the GOP.

The only alternative to McCarthy would be Scalise.

If McCarthy decided not to run I doubt they would be able to elect anyone else.

OP: Opinions on Speaker of the House

IMHO, it's really a toss-up as to what this chaotic situation will bring. Rep McCarthy--- of kiss the Trump ring fame--- who is salivating for the opportunity, is so weak and so lacking in leadership skills he may not make it to the number of votes he needs.

These MAGA Republicans are in such a shambled mess as they eschew governing and ignore the few sane and responsible elected leaders remaining in their ranks. Such an ongoing shame for the former Grand Old Party.

That is what the House Whip is for.

The Speaker is the mouthpiece and is almost always the best Congressmen at raising campaign donations for the party, generally. It is more of a reward for bringing dollars into party campaign coffers, than it is a leadership selection.

If you are a monster at raising money, you are rewarded with the House Speaker role.

Even politicians are not immune to the laws of interpersonal politics.
