Review my posts. I dislike reposting for conversationalists for whom "listening" means "waiting for the other person to stop talking."

I think they should take government out of marriage completely.

Please do not demean the struggle of Aftican-Americans to achieve basic human rights by equating it with gay marriage, a phenomenon in which most gay people were not interested until relatively recently, and one which by no stretch of the imagination is a liberation from chattel slavery.

No one is denying anyone equality. We are simply specifying that marriage should be what it has always been, across societies and centuries: the union of one man and one woman. Other arrangements exist and have always existed, with varying degrees of legality and permanence; but there is no reason now for some gays and their sympathizers to encourage parodies of marriage simply because they wish more variety in their choice of relationships.

Are you really placing homosexuals in the same category as child molesters?

I'm sorry you find a Schizophrenic a "deviant". It's a mental illness.

American Heritage Dictionary
de·vi·ant (dē'vē-ənt) Pronunciation Key
adj. Differing from a norm or from the accepted standards of a society.

I'd say, yes. Schitzophrenics are deviants by definition.

More to the point, though, sprinter, all three of your examples already enjoy the benefits of marriage; mainly because by definition, they're "woman marrying a man".

Other aspects of their lives might make them unsuitable spouses (or in the case of the child molesters, unsuitable to remain in society at all).

But the fact remains that, by definition, marriage is:

American Heritage Dictionary
mar·riage (mār'ĭj) Pronunciation Key
n. The legal union of a man and woman as husband and wife.

Ahhh, but why constrain ourselves with common sense & reality.
This topic is one reason so many people find liberalism ridiculous.

You simply cannot be something you are not. You can pretend but you cannot make the rest of the world unwilling partners to the charade & no ammount of deception will create truth from falsehood.

Its fine to be gay, nothing really wrong with it, but if you want to get married you need a husband & wife, woman & man.

If California decides to ignore it all they have succeeded in doing is creating a protected lie.

Exactly. A meatball is not a lampshade.

You can call it a lampshade but it is not one, and never will be.

Because by definition it is a meatball.

And if we're willing to change our definition of what a lampshade is, what's next? What of the lamp? What happens to the end table when the "Lampshade" goes bad? Who will clean up? What about the smell once the meat is rotten? How do you keep the cat from eating it? Do you need to keep the living room cold to keep the meat fresh?

(Do I need to say this?) A ridiculous analogy but...everything has implications.

Once you start changing definitions of things (important things, not meatballs), there are implications. Sure, some people will get some satisfaction that they can call themselves "married". But at what price in administration? Lawsuits? Paperwork? Other accommodations?

The degree to which some get upset about it makes it seem that someone is holding a gun to THEIR head forcing them to wed someone of the same sex.

The Gay community has never said marriage was a GAY thing. Its a humanity thing. The reality is that Gay marriage historically has been allowed. Its pretty ill informed to think marriage is only between a man and a woman. Thats just not supported by historical facts.
