In an editiorial column today by a resident writer for the Louisville Courier-Journal, the writer stated that Franklin D. Roosevelt was the only great US president of the twentieth century. His article was about FDR's economic recovery policies.

This is my question: If FDR had been only a two term president, instead of a great war-time leader, would he have been considered great or would he have been considered a socialist failure? Remember, it is his legacy that created all the "entitlement" programs that are blowing our nation's budget today. Even more so than the cost of our military.

FDR was the greatest and best we had. I wish he could have lived and ran for 10 terms! The country would be alot better off today.

FDR was not even close to the greatest president we had.

FDR was a failure in economic terms, thankfully the war pulled us out of the eternal circle of socialism in which some of it exists today.

By the way, about that war thing, nice going.

As of this post, only 2 of the 3 respondents seem to have taken my question for it's intent. So, since I must have not posed a good question, let me rephrase it.

Had FDR left office in January 1941 (almost a year before Pearl Harbor), would he have been considered great?

I thnik that historians have come to conclude that FDR's economic policies were a failure. They did however help many people and gave confidence. What is greatness can be debated. The epole at the time thought that truman was the worse president but historians take a completely different view. What a democrat thinks is great is not waht a republican thinks is great.

One has top realize how slowly the economy takes to make a comeback from something as severe as the Depression. Roosevelt didn't single-handedly save America from its economy. He increased government spending as to give people jobs and make sure they didn't starve. This created the greatest public works and infrastructure projects of our times. Without this, the happy and prosperous 50s could not have existed. The reason why war helps the economy is because it increases federal spending. The war did in a couple years what Roosevelt did in almost a decade. Roosevelt took the same logic and applied it to his policies in the years before the War. He added to this safeguards against further abuse of the markets. The reason why 1987 did not become 1929 is largely due to these policies. So while he would not have preeeminent historical status, he would still be considered a success.

yep, FDR was the greatest american fascist and socialist in the 20th century. he should have been taken out back when he put the banks on holiday and strung up in a tree.
his going against the Constitution, making unconstitutional programs and taking away freedom from citizens should have him a place reserved in hell.
I think our founding fathers are still rolling in their graves for the mess that the liberal god fdr gave us.

He never should have served the last (4th) term.

And the fact that he forced 110,000 Americans of Japanese descent into internment camps keeps him out of the "greatest" category.

he should have never been in more than 2 terms at all, plus his policies did nothing but make the depression worse.
