got together with some hotel chains and restaurant chains and attractions and offered deeply discounted rail passes to Americans this summer.

Hotels could get filled. People could try AMTRAK and see America. Good PR for them. Give Americans a break!

I hear ridership is up.

Sorry Amtrak is now run by the government that would mean you would need some brains and capitalist ideas to lower the prices.

It would be a Great idea, "if" we had high speed rail. This would also help offset the airline issues and we could start taking freight off of the commercial lines.

That's a shame. Years ago my family took Amtrak to Seattle. The scenery was incredible! But it was expensive to have a sleeper car.

That is so sad. If one of the candidates would offer up a get out of the car and see America deal. Save money and gas, Use no oil. No pain at pump. That would be so good for the average American and it might even be profitable for the participants.

Amtrack has no need to reduce fares. They are setting ridership records at the moment, and can probably actually raise fares a bit and still keep their carriages full.

I am coming to the NE for a month next week. We will get NE rail passes 300 per adult and 150 for kids for 15 days. Since there will be 4 adults and 5 kids, it will be way cheaper than renting a van (2500 bucks for 15 days) with parking, diesel, getting lost and insurance. Amtrak takes us right into town.

If Amtrak made this available to everyone each summer at maybe a bit better price and hotels and restaurants all chipped in, it would be a very nice thing they could do for America.

They don't need it, but the public needs lower fares and more trains. Full trains don't do us much good.

I think they already do this sort of travel deal.

don't worry, the airlines are about to run themselves into the ground and we won't have any other choice but to stay home, drive a car and spend $200 on gas, or get on the train.
