With all the bally-hoo over corporate T. Boone Pickens and talk of utilizing more solar energy, wind energy, natural gas... to fuel our energy, there are two sides to the equation.

First, as for me, I'm all for it. All of it. Let's break our dependency on oil and especially utilize renewable energy sources.

However, individuals and political groups are openly fighting against these (and other) ideas. And they are scoring a lot of success.

I live in Oregon. We have one of the most tremendous wind, solar, wave, hydroelectric & natural gas resources available in North America. However, we also have activist liberal judges who are consistently siding groups like the ACLU... who have filed hundreds of lawsuits against such projects as they state they are bad for the environment, block people's views from their houses... and the democratically appointed judges have been agreeing with them and causing projects to be canceled and millions of dollars of payouts awarded to such groups & peoples.

I have to admit, some of their concerns have a measure of merit. Although Oregon has thousands of miles of underground natural gas pipelines, there is a new project on the drawing boards whereby a new pipeline from the coast to east Oregon will be built along with new drilling, and people have concerns regarding taking of property, safety issues regarding lines close to their property... Also, some birds have been killed in wind fields by the props and that raises some concerns.

But in Oregon, the single most liberal state in the country, I have to admit it suprises me that the very people that vocalize the demand to "go green" (hmmmmm, maybe they're talking about the Oregon Ducks) are the very ones blocking those efforts.

Seems to me there has to be a balance- but I doubt we'll find it. And what if Obama is elected? Liberal activist judges will follow. Will thins further hurt the cause of expanding renewable energy resources?

Not if the Big O wants to take advantage of renewable energy resources. He'd appoint pro-renewable energy people and support pro-renewable energy leglislation.

On a side note, there should be a way to say "renewable energy resources" with less syllables. "Fossil fuel" just rolls off the tounge so easily, alliteration and all.

the OP should take natural gas off their list as a "renewable fuel" unless they were reffering to cow farts.............

Big Oil, slowly but surely, is going to get into the renewables game. There's simply too much money to be made. Every major oil company is suffering from declining production growth or absolute declines in production. The business model is not sustainable. Despite the record profits at oil companies, the profit margins are incredibly low.

If oil companies want to survive, they're going to have to get in on the action. Many of them, like Shell and BP, already are.

Maybe we should just call it RER.

You haven't been listening to what big 0 says, he is against drilling, wind, solar, almost everything to help our situation. He is hoping Rev Wright can pray us out of our energy problems....!

Though I am for drilling, I can understand why some people would not support it, but what I don't understand is how the same environmental extremists are also against every viable alternative we have be it wind, solar, nuclear, natural gas, or the electric car. The one thing they do support is corn ethanol, which is the WORST of all the possible alternative fuels we have. That said, I think the environmentalists view humans as a parasite on the earth. They know our civilization is based on energy, and without it we would collapse and millions would die because without energy, our planet could not sustain our population. I believe that is what liberal environmental elitists want to see happen.
