When Koffi Annan was the United Nations Secretary General, he was a household name, achieving almost celebrity status. Everyone either knew who Koffi was or recognized his name.

Fast forward and the UN now has a new Secretary General. But unfortunately, most people do not know the guy's name or where he's from. Now, I am quite sure this new Secretary General is doing a fantastic job, but doesn't he deserve a little more respect and press coverage...just like Koffi?

I think Moon prefers to stay away from the limelight and run things behind the scenes. He likes maintaining a low profile.

I thnik that it is the UN itself that has become almost a laughing stock really. No matter who is secretray general not many have any faith that the UN is anyhting other than a debating society anymore. It seems their best role in the world is as a relief world agency in disasters and then only in under devekoped countries.

I see...but isn't it in his best interest, as well as the interest of the UN to avail himself more to the world? I understand what you are saying, but it just seems as if the UN was living up to it's namesake when Koffi was at the helm.

Also, Although I have not been actively looking, I have yet to see or hear a comment from Moon regarding Bush or the Iraq War since he took office.

IMO, the United Nations is so corrupt, so ineffective, that "it", the UN, should be disbanded - closed up, the real estate sold (use the building for the homeless population.

This single data point destroys any credibility the UN could ever have.

Perhaps you are right. But, if the UN shifted its focus to those areas, what Organization or nation(s) will assume the role of providing neutral forces to troubled spots around the world when regional conflict arise? Certainly not the U.S., its to busy starting wars and showing bias toward Israel...China perhaps; I don't think so...the Chinese are more focused on replacing the U.S. as the world economic powerhouse.
