I'm really not fussed either way whether people hunt (if the kill is eaten, and not just for the sake of it.
It is a tradition with some families and if the kids want to follow in the footsteps of their parents then by all means take them hunting and teach them how to do it responsibly.
And it is right that a lot of serial killers did torture animals when they were young but can honestly say I never once read of or heard of them taking on a deer or using a gun to do this. Comparing serial killers to teaching kids to hunt is a sad attempt to get people on side who would otherwise not be aware of these details.

Geez, half you people are nuts! To remain ignorant of firearms in no way protects you from them, quite the opposite. Hunting is absolutely needed because we've almost wiped out all the natural hunters, wolves, mountain lions, etc. And sorry, like it or not, if you eat any meat at all, the same blood is on your hands as the hands swinging the sledgehammer into the head of a steer.

My children hunt and fish. My oldest got his first deer at the age of 9. Today, my sons are grown very fine men - with children of their own. And now we, as a family, go hunting and fishing frequently -

Hunters and fishermen are stewards of the lands - they actually are very important in the conservation movement.

IMO, the OP is opposed to guns in general - hence his opposition to hunting.
Exactly. Anti-gun nuts assume everyone who owns a gun is a Columbine killer. Someone who hunts a deer and eats the meat is no worse than the millions walking around in leather jackets and dining on steak. Hunters in the US aren't making deer or other hunted animals in the US extinct - hence the hunting seasons and catch limits. Without the hunters, the population of deer would skyrocket, leading to far more car accidents injuries and deaths. (But in anti-hunter / PETA minds, one animal life is worth an infinite amount of human lives.)

But at least you're up close and personal.

At the rate we are going, the sooner my kids know how to shoot and kill animals to eat the better. Add to that learning to shoot and kill anyone who tries to take their meat or guns, and I just might sleep better at night.

Agree completely, which is why my kids all know how to hunt and use firearms. My wife and I, both, taught them ourselves.

Forgive me, but I think young children should be taught everything that it possible to teach them. But, as educators, we also have the responsibility to teach them the consequences of what they have learned to do. Not just the consequences as a slate of edicts, but how to think through their actions and anticipate the possible consequences, and make moral judgments about them. (I hasten to add that by "moral", I do not mean "obedient".)

There are times when killing animals is consistent with general well-being---like cockroaches in the kitchen sink. Teaching children absolutism does them no favors.
