CNN is reporting that Russia may decide to basically recreate the Soviet Union. If they did America and Europe would scream but I doubt they would really do anything about it. Russia has the military might and the oil and no one would want to go to war with them over the issue.
Russia taking over the small country of Georgia, which use to be part of the Soviet Union may be the first part of the grand plan.
They'll do something. The U.S. was really fast to help set up oil infrastructure in Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan. They won't let that go without a fight.
This situation is what NATO and the UN is for. But once again I would expect those in the region to lead the effort not the USA. Once called upon to be involved I would want all US forces to be under US command not Europes. Europe and the UN have a nastey habit of delegating all the worst possible assignments to the USA..
I don't think Russia has plans to take over Georgia, just to annex South Ossetia and maybe Abazakhia, which they should because of what the Georgian military did.
This whole thing started with Georgia sending troops into South Ossetia to "cleanse" it of Russian citizens. Saakashvili would not have done that without the permission or perhaps even on the orders of Bush. It seems the neocons have decided the time to confront Russia is now before they gain any more strength. Forget the fact that US forces are spread so thin that to open another front would be suicidal.
I don't think they have any desire of reconstituting the Soviet Union. They are just concern about those former Soviet republics becoming too pro-Western. Even if they ever became too pro-Western, I wouldn't be surprised if Russia and China formed an alliance of their own with similar chapters as those of NATO

Yes, because Clinton had US troops on the ground propping up US puppet governments and was building air bases and military facilities.
That was mostly Tony Lake's doing. The neo-con Tony Lake was Clinton's national security advisor who got denied confirmation as Director CIA because he lied about spending $500 to $800 Million in tax payer money to buy weapons from Iran and infiltrate them into Bosnia through Albania with help from al-Qaeda in violation of UN Security Council resolutions. Since Lake is Obama's foreign policy advisor, if he gets elected then it will be deja vu.

No kidding. That's why the US is in Afghanistan. A good chunk of the oil and natural gas can only go through Russia, Iran or Afghanistan.
Most of the ex soviet states are non-NATO, so ain't nothing should be done there. NATO wasn't intended to bring the entire world under its umbrella. Sabre rattling brings war. We maxed out our Bank of China credit card on Iraq and might prepare some more charges for Iran so we won't be fighting too many wars anytime soon.
Sanctions work, I guess. Don't we need the black gold from these guys?

This is the problem from the outset. If CNN cannot provide decent coverage of our presidential candidates (and it can't), then how in the hell can one expect them to get it right on Russia?
Russia has no plans to recreate the Soviet Union. It has no plans to annex anything, other than perhaps South Ossetia (I doubt Abkhazia will be annexed). Russia may agree to support a referendum in each place whereby the people will decide.
Save for the Baltic States - never recognized as part of the Soviet Union anyway - the West should do nothing about Russian activity in this part of the world. It was fine as part of the Russian empire, fine as part of the Soviet Union. We have zero interest in interfering at all. My guess is that things will continue pretty much as they were before, with perhaps less noise from Georgia and Ukraine.
