Ok, so this is a shameless plug, but I wanted to throw this out there for those who haven't seen the trailer for 2081: Everyone Will Finally Be Equal. It's based on the story of Harrison Bergeron, a man who is handicapped by the powers that be simply because he is exceptional. In the story, those that are exceptional are brought down to the level of common endowment. By placing heavy weights on those with greater strength, a mask on those with greater beauty, and earphones which shriek in the ear of those with greater intellect, everyone becomes equal. Thoughts?
While an intriguing story line, this is far from a realistic view of a possible future. Control of the mind and emotion is a far better leash than weights on the strong and masks on the beautiful. A mask can to easily be removed, weights to easily dropped. And once that day comes, the strong will be even stronger, the intelligent more determined, and the beautiful far more self assured.
1984 on the other hand, gives us a much more possible view of the future, one where war has become everlasting, government control is exchanged for a false feeling of security, and all forms of one's self identification have been removed in favor of the all encompassing Big Brother. In fact, the theme of 1984 can be seen slowly coming to fruition every day in our ever evolving society. Freedoms are slowly eroded everyday in favor of security. People ever more willing to give up bits of their rights to feel secure in their homes. And all the while they are being slowly imprisoned.
So yes, a very intriguing storyline, but definitely not something I will be worrying about in the future.
No doubt, Reads2MUCH. 1984 is obviously much more plausible, however, I don't think we can overlook the fact that the masses would willingly punish the exceptional to "bring them back down to earh". Whatever your politics, the idea of a "windfall profits tax" appeals to people because of the supposed punishment of success. Insecurity, I think, compels people to reign in the outliers.
I can not wait to see this movie, and yes its a very good possibility that is what is going to happen in the future if people do not stand up and say enough is enough.
