Default New rules proposed to protect anti-abortion doctors

The Bush administration proposed stronger job protections Thursday for doctors and other health care workers who refuse to participate in abortions because of religious or moral objections.

Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt said health care professionals should not face retaliation from employers or from medical societies because they object to abortion.

"Freedom of conscience is not to be surrendered upon issuance of a medical degree," Leavitt said. "This nation was built on a foundation of free speech. The first principle of free speech is protected conscience."

Sweet, does this mean I can stop refusing to serve $4 cups of coffee because I don't "believe" anyone should spend that much money on a cup of coffee, and not get fired from my job?

That'd would be AWESOME!

Indeed. The national collective IQ would spike if people started depending their brains instead of their adrenal glands.

Good deal, I agree they shouldn't be forced to perform abortions.

Yeah, next thing ya know doctors wont have to give your children medication because "god will heal them". The freaks that starve their children because they wont say amen are the Americans that Bush wants to appease.

The problem with this is that someone's religious or moral stance are personal. Someone can't make other people follow what they think is right because they have personal moral or religious objections to abortion. Doctors/healthcare workers that may have to perform abortions shouldn't refuse to do them because of personal objections, performing abortions is part of their job, but they're refusing to do so based on a personal bias.

Of course they shouldn't have to participate in performing abortions, if they object to the procedure. Why should they be compeled to do what is aganist their principles? Thank goodness, there are some Doctors who still stand up for human rights.

If a doctor believes that abortion is murder then how can you force that doctor put aside his/her conviction to commit what he/she believes is murder? Doctors should not be forced to do elective abortions if it violates their conscious unless the mother's life was on the line.

Committing murder is not part of anyones job description. Like it or not, that is how they see it.

Oh BTW before I get a bunch of whiney poo. Im pro choice, but in the true sense of the word. What you do is your business. I am uninterested as long as decisions are made by and done by and to a sane adult willing human. I am simply against making people go against their core beliefs.
