america likes abortions, so why not prostitution?
this has always confused me. abortion is legal, but prostitution is only legal in 1 state, and not even totally legal in the entire state. why does a woman have the right to choose what to do with her body when it comes to abortion, but she doesn't have the right to sell it for sex? a woman either has the right to her body, or she doesn't. what the hell?

I think it should be legalized and prostitutes should pay taxes like everyone else, get health checks and also be eligible for Social Security. It is the "oldest profession", so even if it is illegal we will never get rid of it.
By the way, I don't think anyone "likes" abortions, however people recognize that you can not force a woman to be an incubator for a fetus she does not want. Also been around forever, legal or not.

I'm all for it. I think it would be safer for the women as well.

we don't like, but we allow. I think it would be a lot safer for the women involved, and like you said, probably be a lot safer for the men VIA STD checks. you make abortion illegal, they go into the back alley. you make prostitution illegal, they go into the back alley.

I guess what I am kind of looking for is a liberal who opposes prostitution. I talked to a girl I know the other day who said that it objectifies women, and treated them like a piece of meat, and she was a pro-choice liberal.

I think it SHOULD be legal. Regulate and tax it.

Women think they have rights, but they have way less than males in America. The amazing thing is they don't even recognize it!
For example:
1. Most health care plans don't cover birth control...yet cover viagra for men...even men in federal prison systems!
2. Costs of childbirth are high even with insurance, you pay more out of pocket for a $7,000 birth than a $120,000 heart transplant (a guy thing)
3. Women are not allowed to be paid for sex, unless they are allowed by men running certain local legalized brothals (vegas, etc).
4. Women are allowed to have babies aborted in the third phase of childbirth, which makes sense as the guys have much to loose, personal freedoms and financial losses, if they have to be repsonsible instead.
5. Blacks made up 12.3% of the total United States population in the 2000 census, with over 75% being white....yet a black president canidate easily wins over a white female canidate for the 2008 elections when it was run as "white woman versus black male" (white men will pick a black, green, blue, etc male anyday over a female president)...nuff said, women are powerless in America and don't even recognize it...or care if they do. The female movement died after women won the right to vote...

I agree as a liberal, pro-choice woman. It works in the Netherlands. I think it objectifies women more when they are involved in illegal prostitution.
And wow, think of the tax income, and no more sending people to jail (reduces costs and overcrowding). Same with marijuana.

Intersting point. I guess that's a double edged sword for some feminists.

I personally don't think it is a good thing and I would not work as a prostitute, however, despite of what I might think, prostitution will be around - until long after I am gone . So if you can not get rid of something, your best bet is too regulate it, to prevent more harm to society.
